Tell everyone in GR Township to get a bullet proof vest...he's packin'! :P

A nice and easy move up the street for Four Friends would be great! It would provide some extremely healthy competition for the new "Cafe du Johnny's Take Out"...I really hope FF relocates close to their old spot!

I bought my wife's anniversary present here a couple months ago - I could've gotten it more conveniently in MallTownUSA or cheaper elsewhere, but is an extra $60 and a quarter for parking worth keeping a place DT? Hell yes it is. These are great people-don't boycott their business just because you don't like them moving out of DT. It would be nice for them to stay, but business is business.

You know, what can you say? They want their nice suburban location complete with large parking lot and glowing sign on a stick, and they can have it.

They will be no different than all of the other jewelery stores that occupy the area. They dont realize that they were special not because they were Herkner Jewelers, but because they were Herkner Jewelers in the same DT location for over 140 years. Why waste the gas on them now when you can go down the road to the three or four at Woodland?

But what can you do? We still have a jeweler downtown, and the space left by these guys is really nice. As long as they dont overcharge for it, it should fill easily.

I think they got snookered by someone flashing the East Beltline traffic counts. Unfortunately, those traffic counts are largely commuters who are in no mood to stop and shop for jewelry on their way home from work. I wish them well and I hope they aren't paying too much more in rent for the new place because, damn, that location is the last place I'd think to look for a jeweler. Looking into my pessamistic crystal ball I see the headline in the Business Journal, "Herkner Jewelers Closing Doors after 145 Years In Business".

  • 3 weeks later...

Some friends of ours spoke with a clerk at Herkners a while ago about the move, and the Herkner people said that they get about 3 complaints a week from customers about parking hassles. I can't wait until they have to field complaints about "all that traffic on the Beltline!!!"

I think Eridony has the crystal ball..
