What's the cheapest place to stay in town?

My far-flung sibs and I are planning a reunion in Grand Rapids next July. Yay!

But I need help in researching CHEAP lodgings for my tight-fisted oldest brother. No, we don't have a guest room; and no, we aren't interested in setting up an air mattress in the basement. No hostels.

When I talked to him on the phone, he said "something like a one-star hotel." He'll have a car, so it's OK if the place is in the 28th Street Wilderness, but NO farther out than that, please.

Any suggestions?

Theres a Motel 6 (I think?) at Alpine and I-96 that always seems to be advertising rates at like $40/night on their sign....
