The Grand Rapids SmartZone LDFA (Local Development Finance Authority) and TIF was started back in 2001, and due to new legislation by the Gov., they have to make some amendments to the plan. The SmartZone covers much of Medical Mile and about 1/2 of Monroe North, as can be seen at this map HERE.

In this latest revision, the LDFA has added a few new developments and "WISH LIST" items:

) Working to put together 4 parcels of riverfront land along Monroe Ave (North of I-196) to market it for a potential mixed-use development, anchored by "high tech" businesses, estimated cost of $4 Million

) 30,000 square foot incubator space, location TBD, est. cost $9 Million

) Relocation of the Consumers Energy power substation from the riverfront

) Streetscape enhancements along Michigan St and on the I-196 bridges in that area

) Pedestrian linkages from Ionia to Division near Michigan St

) Feasibility study of a roundabout at Michigan and College

) Major BRT station at Michigan St and Lafayette

) Bostwick reconstruction from Lyon to Michigan

Projects already funded or partially funded by the LDFA include:

) Reconstruction of Bond St and Trowbridge

) Reconstruction of Lyon from Division to Lafayette

) Michigan St bridge over Division

) Wayfinding signage for Medical Mile

) Underground communications conduit for Medical Mile

) Development support/tax reimbursement for the Michigan Street Development

If you want to learn more, you can read the amendment here, or attend the City Commission Meeting Tuesday August 12th, Committee of the Whole 9:30 AM
