In no particular order, except for number one:

1. Pittsburgh, PA | The rivers, the bridges, the hills... it all comes together to make a stunning setting for a great skyline, and PPG is probably my all time favourite skyscraper.

2. New York City, NY (Midtown) | Get New York out of the way... I prefer downtown as a place to midtown, but as far as the sklines go, midtown is my favourite. Coming down the LIE and having that skyline looming in front of you, awesome!

3. Brooklyn, NY | Often overlooked on account of it's giant siblings across the East River, Brooklyn has a great skyline, and it only promises to improve over the next decade.

4. San Francisco, CA | Like Pittsburgh, it's natural setting makes this skyline a winner. The bay, the hills, the bridges, and the Tran-America Pyramid, a signature tower that makes itself completely at home in the city by the bay.

5. Paris, FRANCE (La Defense) | Looking down the Champs-Elysees toward this futuristic almagamation is stunning.

6. St. Louis, MO | The Arch rocks, and the city's skyline is a terrific backdrop for it.

7. Chicago, IL | Area, height, diversity... Chicago has it going on. And the way it hugs the lakeshore and river canyon are big bonuses.

8. Yellowknife, NWT, CANADA | I just love it 'cos it's there, whodathunk!?

9. Philadelphia, PA | Love. It.

10. Providence, RI | I walk through it everyday, and can see parts of it though my living room window, so I better like it, or I'd be quite annoyed. <_<

WOW Cotuit and IvoryTower

Pittsburgh is #1 and its not 1979! Thanks!

Pittsburgh does have a super skyline but I would have to make it #5, #2 in the U.S. though!

#1 Hong Kong

#2 Singapore

#3 Sydney

#4 Chicago

#5 Pittsburgh

#6 Los Angeles

#7 San Francisco

#8 Seattle

#9 Dallas

#10 Houston (just so much of it)

NYC I would put down but Wayyyyyyyy overhyped.

The 10 skylines that disappoint (according to their potential, with all the activities going on in their town they could build a better skyline!):

#1 New Orleans

#2 Boston

#3 Montreal

#4 Mexico City

#5 Portland

#6 Detroit

#7 Miami

#8 Tampa

#9 St. Louis

#10 Austin

DC would make the list but is exempted cause of the whole sacred nations capital only room for monuments thing.

That's the first good picture I've seen of Yellowknife's skyline. Thanks Colin. We can only hope that Yellowknife and Canada's north continue to grow, and grow upwards... we need more people up there, and we have a chance to get a city right... it's a way to preserve the environment while maintaining a city up there.

I'm surprised Minneapolis hasn't appeared on anyone's list. For style, balance, and just putting it all together in a nice package, it's hard to beat Minneapolis.

As far as New Orleans goes, someone said they were disappointed in the skyline considering all the activity there. There really isn't too much business activity. The last major office building--the Louisiana Land & Exploration Building--was built in 1984 when the oil boom was just crashing. Most of the stuff built recently is relatively small scale tourist hotels and the like.

Sticking with North America. Noted as I thought of them. No ranking.

Pittsburgh-There's nothing like driving through in the middle of the night. Amazing.

Seattle: Comibined with Seattle's vibe and scenery, I consider it nearly perfect

Miami: Is just so Miami, no need to say anything more.

Toronto: How cities are done right.

Vancouver: See Toronto with the addition of a near-perfect setting.

San Francisco: Compact, tight, I left my heart (and some underwear) there, more than once.

Houston: Powerful, tall, and grand.

NYC: A class by itself, afterall, it's New York

Chicago: A giant mid-western city, all grown up, walkable, the view from the water can't be matched.

My honorable mentions:

Cincinnati, Atlanta, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Tampa...and my little hometown, Nashville...home sweet home.

Pittsburgh gets the nods because its the only city in the world where you enter the interstate tunnel on approach after passing some office center and a mall, no clue on whats ahead:

Then the sky opens up again and:

Pittsburgh isn't known for having the tallest skyscrapers BUT, It has several bldgs. that are taller then ANY structure in the state of Florida, Tampa, Miami, Orlando, Jaxville, all are shorter! San Francisco also is another major city that Pittsburgh beats on the tallest skyscraper (from a inhabitable floor, the Pyramid thing in SF is taller by a few feet, but they don't rent office space above 800 feet on that!)

Houston

Chicago

Singapore

Hong Kong

Sydney

Seattle

Los Angeles

are my other favs.
