Favorite skylines

Recommended Posts

Why KC? KC's skyline is visible from up to 20 miles away. When ever I go to STL, all I see from a distance in STL's skyline is the ARCH(plus that is the only unique structure). Most of the structures in DT KC are unique. And Charlotte? How is that a disappointment? Like I said before, a good shyline is not just about density, it's about uniqueness(P.S. I do like STL's skyline), that's why NYC's skyline isn't that great right now, I think L.A.'s is much better.

Detroit's skyline can be sean from 30 miles away at Stoney Creek Park near Romeo where Kid Rock was born. Just a little fun fact.

-NYC

-LA

-San Diego

-Atlanta's BUCKHEAD Skyline (Downtown Atl 'scrapers are nice, but they all look tacky together....almost as if they were picked from different cities and nonsensically thrown in Atl)

Why do you say that?Just 'cause my city is better?

It was my list,so you cant really say anything. B)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Miami is better than what? No offense, but the city has many issues to overcome and a somewhat descent skyline isn't going to help solve them.

BTW, if you have a problem with people responding to your opinions, don't bother adding your two cents.

Now you know better than this. This is a poll of favorite skylines and I am sure you would agree that everyone can have a set of favorites. Its just like people's opinions of dark frigid cold winters.

Skylines I have seen, rated on a 1-10 scale:

West

Seattle - 10 (probably my favorite as far as buildings and setting go)

San Francisco - 7 (Lot's of density...faults keep a height limit on that, though)

Denver - 5 (A couple of nice buildings, but many not too interesting)

Honolulu - 5 (A lot of density, but mainly condos/hotels, plain)

Oklahoma City - 4 (Just didn't like it)

South

Miami - 6 (Big buildings, interesting buildings, but seem to be a little bit scattered...don't fit together)

Atlanta - 8 (Very impressive driving from north to south on I-75, but very linear)

Louisville - 7 (Attractive, fits its size well)

Nashville - 7 (Many good views, attractive, modest for size)

Birmingham - 6 (Nice buildings, young and old, but not too many of them)

Richmond - 4 (Boxy...not too imaginative)

Little Rock - 6 (Pretty good size for a smaller city)

Knoxville - 5 (Beautiful up close...no real skyline, though...no height)

Memphis - 4 (Density is alright, but not too much height and not too many new buildings around)

Raleigh - 5 (A couple of nice buildings, but not very big)

Winston-Salem - 6 (Pretty good for its size)

North

Boston - 7 (Nice skyline, especially from the water)

New York - 10 (Who can argue this? The skyscrapers, young and very old fill the horizon)

Cincinnati - 5 (Not too bad looking, but lacks height for its size)

Baltimore - 4 (Just...not attractive)

Philadelphia - 7 (Pretty decent size, good looking towers)

Providence - 7 (I don't know why...I just like this city...friendly, small but nice skyline...kindof like the northern version of Nashville)

Canada

Vancouver - 9 (Very, very dense for its size. Impressive from the nearby park)

Halifax - 7 (Not much size, but I can't get over the view from the Citadel, beautiful)

St. John - 6 (Good size for population...decent)

<_< pittsburg is boring...

I don't know if you mean the skyline or the city as a whole, but either way I disagree. This city has tons of cultural amenities for its size; also some nice areas to go bar/club hopping or window shopping. Some nice new development going on at the moment too. Lots more to do here than many people realize.

Good to see Providence high on the list! Such an overlooked city. Look for three or four new high rises in the next couple years there too.

-Houston

5. Miami

6. San Francisco

7. Seattle

8. Charlotte

9. Pittsburgh

Minneapolis

Providence

top 10 skylines, come on guys, some of the previous places barely have skylines. eg. Mobile, Detroit....

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Detroit barely has a skyline? Are you kidding me? It has some of the best collection of Art Deco and early century skyscrapers around. Now I'll admit that from Windsor it does look a bit cramped, but take a look at it from the ambassador bridge (it looks gigantic from there, the city's downtown grew away from the river, not along the waterfront) or from midtown or from the highway or from the air. Look at the picture that Allan posted up early on in the forum and then tell me that Detroit barely has a skyline.

Anyway, my favorite North American skylines in somewhat of an order.

Detroit- When you get to know it, you'll know what I'm talking about. Check it out coming in from the freeway.

Chicago- Enough said.

Toronto- One of the cleanest and most beautiful cities, with towers to match.

Philadelphia- Two thumbs up.

Pittsburgh- Look at it from the new stadiums.. umm...

NYC- It's New York.

Minneapolis- I don't know, it just looks good.

Vancouver- For a humble canadian city with not the biggest towers, look at the size of it!

San Francisco- Love it.

Cincinnati- Under rated and under appreciated. Look at it from Kentucky.

Atlanta- One of the few landlocked cities that always catchese my eye.

Montreal- Wonderful old fashioned towers.

Cleveland- Depending on what angle you look at it from. Try it from the freeway or Jacobs Field.

Seattle- Always one of my favorites, it's called the emerald city for a reason.

Boston- Took awhile for me to understand it, but I really to like it.

Honerable Mentions:

Milwaukee

Baltimore

Miami

Los Angelos

Houston

Dissapointments:

Oakland

Jacksonville

Portland

San Antonio

Phoenix

While I have many issues with the city of Detroit itself.. I'm a new-found lover of its architecture. Browsing around Emporis.com I found sooo many gorgeous art-deco skyscrapers... really only New York can compete in terms of such an elegant and varied collection. The Renaissance Center is large and often only shown by itself, but when shown in conjunction with the rest of the skyline it doesn't look so desolate.

And for the Mobile comment quoted in the reply above mine... they're building a 750 foot tower which is definitely worth noting. They may not have a huge skyline yet, but they're getting there and IMO will be the next Gulf-coast commerce center. That new 750 foot tower (forget the name of it) is poised to become the tallest building among Gulf cities outside Houston. Not too shabby for a relatively small city.

My list of favorites:

New York (no explanation necessary)

Boston

Richmond (coming round the I-64 bend is tantalizing and only getting better)

Chicago

San Francisco

Disappointments:

Minneapolis (lots of big buildings, yes, but they're some of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen, individually)

Los Angeles (maybe the toxic cloud hanging over the city is obscuring my view... but the buildings are unimaginative. If they were better-designed then I would probably like the skyline)

San Antonio (I've never seen a more-antiquated, stubby skyline than this one)

Jacksonville (If it wasn't for the Modis building and the water I'd think it was Wichita, Kansas. It has potential though and its waterfront is nice... just underutilized)

Kansas City, KS (The kid sister of KC, MO is incidentally less-attractive than their older brother)

European (and one Canadian) Delights:

Calgary, Canada

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Berlin, Germany (gorgeous architecture)

Paris, France (same as Berlin)

Milan, Italy (****ed up traffic, but a gorgeous skyline that's easily viewed from the main highways ringing the city.)

Im surprised not to see Toronto that much.

But some of you people shouldent put your hometown just because you live there, I could make a list with Providence at number 1 but I dont even think its top 15, its a nice skyline but that would be way to biased.

And Boston has a great skyline, I dont know why it gets hated on so much lol.
