Community Gardens and Farmer's Markets

I've mentioned this to quite a few people, and they seem to love the idea. This is great to hear! Please keep us updated. Perhaps this could correlate w/ the expansion of the farmer's market to carry goods year round as well??? That guy in Madison, WI seems to have a great thing going on. Such a concept in GR could also include something to put some of our troubled youth to work. Please keep that in mind.

>IDEA< Perhaps this came out of the standard lease/easement/family member sale language involving land rights transfers. "For $1 and other good and valuable consideration..." Just look through the assessment files. My house "sold" for $1.00 a couple of times, by previous owners to family members.

Though I would definitely like to see an urban garden in Grand Rapids, I'd like to mention that you can get local goods (including some veggies) through the West Michigan Co-op. Sure, that's a shameless plug (I'm their tech guy) but a big reason we founded and created to Co-op was to help folks who were trying to find local goods when the markets close for the winter....

Green Gathering: Actions is Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Harrison Park Elementary School from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Please park and use the Muskegon Street entrance.

Plan conecpts that capture the public's input will begin to create a vision for what an implemented plan would look like. Five special study areas, including the Grand River, Butterworth Landfill, 201 Market, Joe Taylor Park, and Ball-Perkins Park will integrate the community's ideas into a series of achievable plans. Citizens will be asked to identify partnering opportunities and funding strategies and to prioritize the City's work plan.

If you are unable to attend Green Gathering: Actions, please look for our "Actions Priorities" survey at www.greengrandrapids.ust.gif

Anyone with an interest in community gardens and urban farming might do well to go to UICA tomorrow for a special screening of this Oscar-nominated documentary:

"Come to UICA this Tuesday at 7PM and see a special screening of the Garden, with a discussion by GRIID. The discussion will be about the issues raised in the documentary and what people are doing in West Michigan to confront those same issues. Local organizations who promote and practice urban gardening/farming will also have information tables at this screening."

If you miss it, you can also see it Wednesday.
