FBC

First Baptist Church (FBC) first opened its doors on June 5, 1866. In 1855, Florence existed in name only, as there was nothing to denote a town except the junction of the two major railroads, the Wilmington and Manchester and the Northeastern.

In 1860, a Presbyterian brethren who lived in a neighboring county began to build a church in Florence, and, when completed, it was the only church in Florence for six years. The people of every faith met at FBC to worship when they could get a minister to preach.

FBC went through a re-build in 1941, and on March 18, 1951, the new (and current) sanctuary was complete. By January 18, 1962, the church building program in its entirety was finished and dedicated.

Broadway Street

Downtown has become
a row of empty units
Crumbling
but standing
longer than 2-generations
come and gone
into a memory chip
Stored
and unforgotten.

Downtown's emptiness where Lyerly's Dry Goods once stood, the local 5 & 10 that sold delicious chocolate covered peanuts, the local A&P Grocery Store and a restaurant with a long white counter that used to make great shakes and burgers that my grandparents and parents never entered because of Jim Crow my generation forgot about...

Finally! a song (and voice) to replace my overwhelming love of Alex Turner's  Arctic Monkeys " 5 0 5 " .(at least sometimes; however..there is but ONE "505".; that ravishes me the same way I am into SKA  to eternity. . .   "'Cause I'm a man, woman
Not often proud of what I choose
I'm a human, woman
A greater force I answer to. . . . "..

Lake City Park and Boardwalk is made possible by the generosity of Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation and include bald cypress trees, wetlands, a man-made lake, a variety of birds, turtles and fishing down a steep embankment along the black waters of Lynches river and under a bridge into downtown from Myrtle Beach Highway 378.

A building that looks like an old tobacco barn has tables, chairs, fans, restrooms for all sexes and even a brick fireplace for the autumn and winter season is a great place to do lunch
