Florence Ater Dark

Picture
First Baptist Church, 300 S. Irby Street at West Palmetto Street, Florence, SC
FBC's imposing tall steeple is well-known in Florence and is probably taller than any other building in Florence city and county.  I use it as a beacon/guide to find my way around Florence where I am often lost in direction  like I do Empire State Building in New York.

The steeple was added in 1876 when there really was no Florence save
in name only as there was nothing to denote a town except the junction of the two railroads, the Wilmington and Manchester bound for Wilmington and the Northeastern bound for Charleston.

FBC first opened its doors June 5, 1866 when Florence was filled with many refugees after the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor.

The church went through another re-build in 1941, and on March 18, 1951, the new (and current) sanctuary was completed.

9 mins · Florence, SC · JournalCharles Notes: 2Thumbs Up! Soule Cafe, Irby Street, heart of downtown Firenze, SC...Somewhat youthful, hip, edgy & the beautiful Florentines are patrons here with good music, art & drip coffee made & served by a cute New Jersey native boy. :) Patrons are mostly college-age ...

The year opens with snow on the third day of 2018. A good sign, a good number, a good year for Florence.
