That was what lead to our current situation. Norfolk was annexing property as the pop grew, but VB and Ches. didn't want the 'bad elements' becoming part of their city.

Poquoson, being a city of less than 12,000 is allowed to share services that otherwise would be impractical. Poquoson shares a sheriff, courthouse, and jail because it would be financially incapable of building its own court and jails. Larger cities can use contracted services for alot but I do not think the state would allow for things like the Sheriff's department. This could all be solved with a vote of the legislature though. One vote would dissolve current boundaries and establish a new city.

Hampton Roads (as weird as it sounds, it is a unique name, like, say, Grand Rapids) could become immensely competitive even if serious dialogue began between the seven cities. The situation as it stands now is that all of the cities in the region are competing for project funding, attracting private sector investment, and tourism interest.

One of the very tangible effects of a possible merger, other than huge publicity, would be increased efforts to improve transportation infrastructure across the region -- because you wouldn't deny a city a sensible multimodal solution to bridge its inconveniently wide waterway, would you? The Tide network could be extended to run from Suffolk to the Oceanfront, and from Newport News to Great Bridge. The population centers of the unified city could be realigned to stop encroachment at Oceana and Langley, without endangering the rural character of the southern portions of the Southside.

I still think "Old Dominion" would catch on better. It is a lot less tacky and cheesy. Plus it would not give credit to any one particular city. "Hampton Roads" has not caught on... plain and simple. "757" or "7 cities" is more popular. Calling us "Hampton Roads" is like referring to the Raleigh area as the "triange" although many people from the area know and use this reference, to the rest of the country the area is known as Raleigh. Now if in Raleigh there was a "triangle university" or "triangle freight lines" or "the triangle peanut company" or if North Carolina was "the triangle state" then maybe Triangle would catch on nationwide.

Does anyone see what I'm getting at???

I've said this time and time again. the City of Hampton Roads. 7 boroughs. 1.7 million people. 5th largest city in the country. Universal police and fire. Vote for mayor, police chief, fire marshall, ect. The current mayors make up city council. Get a major league team. Call it a day.
