The Times Dispatch has compiled a comprehensive Fall Arts Preview.

There may be some confusion about venues, i.e. programs of the Richmond Symphony. All Altria sponsored Masterworks and Genworth sponsored Symphony Pops will be held in the 1800-seat Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage -- not in Rhythm Hall* There are two scheduled "Rush Hour" concerts which will be performed in the 200-seat Gottwald Playhouse at RCS.

*I e-mailed the newspaper about the venue confusion. Maybe it will be corrected.

One ommission I noticed in Dance programs is the company which performs (and owns) Dogtown Theatre (a former school gymnasium) at 109 West 15th Street on the Southside in Manchester.

Theatre writer Liz Jewett has compiled a list of locally produced shows that will be mounted on Richmond stages between now and the end of 2012.

Her list does not include professional touring shows booked into theatres such as The Landmark, Carpenter and the Modlin Center. Nor does it include productions by theatre departments of area universities.

I bet a quarter you didn't know there is another news source in Richmond. It's called EXAMINER dot com and covers other cities as well.

Here's a story from EXAMINER about the Chihuly's Glass Art exhibit running from October 20, 2012 through February 10, 2013 at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Chihuli's "Red Reeds" were installed last spring in the reflecting pool outside BEST CAFE in VMFA's Sculpture Garden.

Today's Times Dspatch has a video about the Dale Chihuly glass exhibition which opens at The Vriginia Museum of Fine Arts next Saturday, October 20th and continues through February 10th, 2013.

Although Chihuly's work has been on display in many musuems, Richmond is the third site of this major exhibition of the artist's creations in glass following showings in San Francisco and Boston over the last five years.

Bow Tie Cinemas, the operators of Movieland on North Boulevard at Leigh Street, is converting the brick foundry building in its parking lot into four art film spaces. Two of them will have 50 seats, and the other two will have 75 and 100 respectively.

At present, Regal Westhampton with two screens is the only art film theater in Richmond.

While the Chihuly Glass Art exhibit is currently the big show at VMFA, another blockbuster will premier at approximately the same time next year.

HOLLYWOOD COSTUME will arrive from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for an extended run beginnng November 2nd, 2013 until February 17th, 2014.

While it will subsequently move to other major museums in the US, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be the only East Coast venue to host the exhibit.

Dale Chihuly's Glass Art display has already surpassed the Picasso exhibit in attendance at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and still has a month to go before final figures are tallied.

See it if you can.  It is extraordinary.

WOW. Has it really? I don't think it was anywhere near as hyped as Picasso.... However it was the only stop on the East Coast.... Is this Chihuly exhibit unique to the East Coast? Maybe even the country? (Prob. not) neat to hear that it has a month left because I haven't gone yet :P

While Dale Chihuly's glass art continues to break attendance records at VMFA, an exhibit of another kind will open at The Virginia Center for Architecture in The Museum District on January 17th.

Well known architect Michael Graves will be featured in the grand old Branch House at 2501 Monument Avenue.

Usually, Virginia Opera presents four productions in a Richmond season, but since the disolution of Lyric Opera Virginia, two more operas and/or musicals will be added this year.  All of them will be on weekends at The Carpenter Theatre.

Apparently I was misinformed when reporting earlier in this thread that The Dale Chihuly Glass Art Exhibit had outdrawn the Picasso show in attendance figures.  I was told that by a museum attendant during a Christmas trip to Richmond, but it's likely he was referring to a December monthly comparison.

The Chihuly exhibit, which closed Sunday, attracted considerably more visitors that anticipated -- approximately 160,000.

Museum Memberships at VMFA rose to about 40,000.

Here is a story from Sunday's RTD:

This is by far one of the coolest things I've read today:

Two locals want to start up an independent movie theater to complement the rise of the Arts District off of Broad (and Grace).

http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/local/columnists-blogs/bill-lohmann/cinema-plan-taps-into-downtown-s-potential/article_0dff126e-d313-5b46-bac2-3043c9b66587.html

Bijou Film Center, the name of the [very early planning-stage] theater project, hopes to build out a 100-125 seat theater that will "bring movies back to Broad Street". The project was inspired as a tribute to the Biograph Theater, the since-gone independent movie house on Grace Street.

To raise awareness, the group is showing the Beatles' hit movie "A Hard Day's Night" at the Byrd, proceeds from which half will go to the Byrd's "Journey to the Seats" fundraising program, and the other half to Bijou Film Center.

Interesting article on using public art to raise awareness of how storm drains impact the James.  If Richmond wants to further its reputation as a leading outdoor city, everyone needs to do their best to improve the environment, especially the James (and Chesapeake for that matter) watershed.

an idiot neighbor around the corner from where we live, blows leaves, grass clippings, everything from the yard down his drain into the sewer.  Want to and should say something but worry about having a neighbor that hates me.

Kindly say something to your neighbor with a smile.  Tell the neighbor that this may clog the drain which can lead to a flood in the area after heavy rains.
