Monica Conyers is a god-awful politician who was lucky enough to be voted in to the city council in 2006. Her husband is United States Representative John Conyers. She has been stuck in many different problems in city government and has been one of the bigger embarrasments next to Kwame Kilpatrick. She is now the President of the city council after Ken Cockrel Jr became the Interim Mayor.

Here are some controversies she has been involved in-

Allegations of threats

In February 2008, details of an exchange between Conyers and an aide to Mayor Kilpatrick, DeDan Milton, were made available through The Detroit News.[6] Conyers allegedly made reference to a gun in an argument with Milton. Conyers has denied the allegations. The police reports have since been withdrawn.[7]

Repayment of travel advances

In January 2009, Detroit's General Retirement System notified Conyers that she owed $5,600 to the City, which included travel advances not spent on business class airfare to London. The pension board also claimed she hadn't submitted receipts for trips to Grand Cayman and Philadelphia.[8]

Synagro investigation

Conyers is also under FBI investigation related to illegal contracts allegedly obtained by sludge processing company Synagro; she has not been charged with wrongdoing.[9]

Personal/professional conduct

In February 2009, Conyers was allegedly restrained during a confrontation with fellow councilmember Kwame Kenyatta, after insulting Kenyatta about his hearing aid, health, and education.[10] Conyers later sent an apology letter, which was rejected by Kenyatta as insincere.

Cobo Deal Rejected

She was the leader in killing a Cobo Expansion of $279 million dollars which would have expanded and renovated Cobo Hall and transfer the property to a regional authority. It is a sad thing that this council couldnt finally get something right and allow for this to happen. The Auto Show will be gone after 2010. I guarantee it.

One of the more famous moments of Monica Conyers.... "Shrek"

Just yesterday before the Cobo Deal was killed....

What an idiot! Monica Conyers is a beotch!

ChiTownGuy, the difference between the nutjobs in the city council in Chicago versus those in Detroit is that the ones in Chicago actually get things done. The council in Detroit, with the cooperation of too many mayors now, has effectively run the city into the ground. I'm really hoping Mr. Bing will be elected; the city needs new blood. If he does, one of two things will happen. Either the council will be cowed by his celebrity and start behaving better (unlikely), or they're going to get huffy about this "outsider" trying to change things (very likely).

If only the folks in Detroit would vote for a new council...

After Detroit voters just got through sending industrialist and businessman Dave Bing and self-professed/former journalist Trekie Ken Cockrel, and nearly sending the even-keeled former deputy mayor Freeman Hendrix through, no. Monica doesn't have a chance in hell of every becoming mayor of Detroit, and especially not as a write-in candidate.

i've been trying to keep up with Detroit Politics (since i'll be moving there in a few months) so if Bing wins Cockrel goes back to the City Council and bumps Conyers down a notch right?

also i read that she's trying to hold a "special session" today at 5pm to try to override the veto, but for all intended purposes the "special session" might be illegal.

I don't even know what to say about the videos posted on a local news website. Absolute ubsurdity as she showed viewers her cluttered home and concluded by jumping on the trampoline while her dog pissed at her feet. I just couldn't believe I was watching this....it was like a 12 year old posting a youtube video.

I tend to side with the city in city-vs-suburbs debates, and as such I have never had a high opinion of L. Brooks Patterson, but this city council (or at least certain members of it) makes it all too clear why so many in the suburbs hesitate to have anything to do with the city politically. The message coming from people like Conyers and Collins is basically "give us your money then get out". If you want to have regional cooperation you can't hoard all of your chips and hope others will simply show you their hands. I think that a region authority to control Cobo is an excellent idea and can really act as the first major stepping stone toward real regional cooperation. I suppose I can understand a level of defensiveness on the part of people who have been put down and left in the cold for so long - but I would expect more from elected officials.
