Independence Corridor

No, because you're transiting rapidly by bus (BRT).  I'm just saying it is express buses routed by Independence.   Reversible is planned because we don't have reverse commute congestion, nor do we have express bus routes taking many reverse commuters.

I'm just being a smartass.   BRT is not a great plan, no one got excited about it, and CATS didn't even keep consensus in the city/CDOT and NCDOT so now they lost their fancy dedicated lanes.   We rebuilt the Eastway/Wendover bridge purely to cut out the center columns which now it turns out they're just going to build for the rest of Independence now.    We will have HOT lanes from 277 to 485, so express buses benefit.

But we still need a real transit plan that will support TOD density on Monroe and/or Central.

If Independence is not widen to I485 and the Monroe bypass is not  build.  All you will have is a major traffic jam like it now.

East Charlotte has major traffic on Independence, Monroe Rd, Sardis Rd now and it will not get any better at the rate Independence is now being improved.  Monroe Road around Crown Point in the after noon has traffic backed up from McAlpine  Creek down to Highway 51.

Exactly.

That is why they are pursing the HOT Fast Lanes strategy for the region to speed up what would take decades to fund the traditional process.   NCDOT will use a public-private-partnership to speed up the Idlewild to 485 section with express/managed/HOT lanes.

So we will start with putting tolls ASAP on the completed transit lanes from 277 to Idlewild by 2016 when the current project is done.   Then by they will have everything in place to be under construction for the rest of it like how they are speeding up the widening of 77.   Also by that time, Monroe Bypass will like be under construction, so other than some construction pain, we will finally have a seamless artery in the southeastern quadrant of our region.

Those highways will then have virtually guaranteed >45mph lanes for our regional express bus fleet.

Because of this Fast Lanes strategy, we will likely see all our highways expanded in a much more sustainable way over the next decade.   We get the infrastructure, but without the paradox and moral hazard that causes them to be wasted and congested with instant-Atlanta-style-sprawl.  http://ww.charmeck.org/fastlanes/

Meridian Place is really shooting up now. It's taller than the shopping center!

Does anybody know what they're doing down beside the car-wash/mini-storage at Independence and Sardis Rd N? I saw a bunch of excavators down there today, looked like they were clearing a road but it kinda dead-ends into Independence, unless it goes under?

My understanding is that the 16 million is coming from the hotel tax while 25 million is from the CIP to turn the Bo/Ovens complex into a amateur sports hub. The Checkers have committed to covering over a million in upgrades& moving practices to the coliseum. It's not mentioned but the Checkers/CRVA are also looking to host youth tournaments, camps & lease the coliseum to those who want to practice there.

Looks like Hendrick Auto Group may be moving the HQ from Monroe Rd to the old BJ's property on Independence. They purchased the property a few months ago and just submitted for approvals last week. Not sure if it's a retrofit of the existing building or new construction.

That building really isn't that old. Seems like just yesterday they demolished the Target to build it (probably 10 years ago now). Hopefully they can re-purpose it.

Tweeted today,

Deputy City Mgr: a major entertainment business has approached CLT about building along Independence Corridor. Won't say who. @wsoctv #cltcc

Top Golf?

They're obviously interested in the Charlotte market since they wanted to put a facility over at Music Factory. Plenty of wasteland on Independence where they could put their complex.
