60 New Jobs in Charlotte in old Merita bakery plant in west Charlotte:

The former Merita Bread plant in west Charlotte will be recycled — in more ways than one.

Zero Waste Recycling, a full-service scrap recycling company based in Lancaster, S.C., purchased the nearly 190,000-square-foot building at 301 Dupree St. to house its new headquarters. The $2.2 million transaction closed June 1.

New spec office building starting in Airport submarket with high parking lot ratios. Ideal for call centers and those intensely using the space. Spec office space like new warehouse space is important to the region as it helps attracts jobs and companies that need space fast. Approx. 750,000 sq ft of warehouse space has been gobbled up in the Concord airport area in the last 2 years with lots of  new companies like Amazon, ETS Express,K-1 Racing etc.

The former Merita Bread plant at 301 Dupree St. was recently sold to Zero Waste… more

Clifford Blanquicet Jr. of Locust Real Estate Advisors represented the seller, Mr. Cabinet Inc., and John Jones of Gibson Smith Realty Co. represented Zero Waste Recycling.

CEO Will Simmons said Friday the move to Charlotte made sense for Zero Waste Recycling, considering that its clients are spread across the Southeast. The warehouse, which sits on an 18.6-acre site, includes loading docks, office space and is near a rail line. Simmons said that is important, as Zero Waste often requires rail to move materials.

“(The building) was a good center point for us to efficiently reach our customer base,” he said. “We’re growing with the needs of our customers.”

Zero Waste Recycling has been in business for two years and has experienced rapid growth since, he added. In addition to its Lancaster headquarters, Zero Waste has a facility in Chester, S.C., and the company leases warehouse space in Gastonia.

Zero Waste Recycling provides demolition and scrap-recovery services and purchases ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, catalytic converters, electronic scrap and post-industrial plastics.

The company also offers industrial and commercial recycling services.

“When it comes to recycling, we can do a zero waste-to-landfill program or waste minimization — it really depends on customers’ appetite and financial goals,” Simmons said.

The company currently employs about 125, but Simmons expects that number to grow with the relocation to Charlotte. About 30 existing employees will be moved to the Queen City, and between 25 and 30 more are expected to be hired after the move is complete.

Simmons said while the company is fairly new, he and Zero Waste Recycling's other owners have backgrounds in the recycling industry. Simmons owned Metal Recycling Services Inc. before that company was sold to Nucor Charlotte-based Corp. (NYSE: NUE) in 2008.

Upfitting the Merita Bread building will cost between $600,000 and $700,000 and an estimated timeline of three months.

“Our target is aggressive, but we’re optimistic we can be in by September,” Simmons said.

Here is the Wikipedia article for the university that Forest Trail Sports University is associated with.  This is going to be very intriguing for the future, but at least it is affiliated with a highly ranked institution.

Fantastic.  A Bay Area company moving jobs here despite HB2 (not a comment of support for HB2).

Well it good to hear that a company from one of the most liberal, progressive states in the country is relocating to the Charlotte are post-HB2.

yup, this is a nice plum. However, lets keep in in context. This is the first out of region, knowledge-oriented, firm to announce a relocation to Charlotte since HB2 was passed three months ago. Between 2009 and 2012 we added finance, fintech and finance related firms (so this excludes lots of other knowledge firms like medical, biotech and precision manufacturing) at a rate nearly triple that.

Some new discussion on possible compromise is encouraging: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/article86419362.html

Sounds like the NBA has been quite proactive in the process.

It's a band aid to be sure. And the NBA just wants their name on the headlines with the words hb2 and change in it. But I don't care about the why and how. As long as some band aid is put on this thing until the voters and/or Feds fix it I'm fine. Because we sure as yit know the NCGA is not fixing anything.

More on topic. I have gotten word that whil HB2 has certainly decimated a lot, there is still a healthy desire for office space in the city, including uptown.

5 new warehouse and flex buildings to be started in Shopton Ridge at I-485 and Hwy 160 (near that interchange) Why is this good news? Because most companies expanding or relocating want existing  buildings and these will help attract them since they  are  in  various sizes. http://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/news/2016/06/28/trinity-capital-developing-five-industrial.html?ana=e_du_pub&s=article_du&ed=2016-06-28&u=oAaDx%2B74FoP4qOJ%2By4AU6dhJPpc&t=1467143409&j=74409102

Business NC magazine ranked the state's biggest economic development announcements in the last year and half  and the biggest in terms of jobs was here in Charlotte (and received hardly any press and no state incentives) This office opened late last year and in that time hired already 800 people. The company: Walmart  and its Global Shared Services basically a back office for financial and payroll services for stores in US and Canada.  They hired some French speaking employees too for their Quebec stores. Their lease was the biggest out of market lease last year in Charlotte at over 107,000 sq ft in Water Ridge Office Park.  The Business Journal was really the only one who reported on this. They plan 1000 jobs so 200 more to go. Plus they have a lease option on the building itself.

http://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/blog/real_estate/2015/06/wal-mart-signs-12-year-lease-for-office-building.html

Also on the list were Red Ventures university area office expansion, Republic Services university area office, Dimensional Funds (uptown then South End) ETS Express in Concord and Techtronic Industries the Hong Kong based owner of Hoover, Dirt Devil and Oreck vacuum cleaners.

"for their Quebec stores" I think for their Canada operations. French is an official language in New Brunswick and common elsewhere in Atlantic Canada. French is, of course an official language for the country of Canada but the concentration is eastern Ontario to the Atlantic.

This is a great find KJH.
