In addition to the post above, there will be a block party celebrating the new mural done by Grand Valley students this past summer. The mural, done in conjuction with the African Community Center, honors recent African Immigrants to West Michigan. There will be free pumpkin carving, face painting, and fun games. There will also food from the Brick Road Pizza Company and the Electric Cheetah Bistro. A DJ will be there playing African and Carribean music. The block party will be in the parking lot behind 1019 Wealthy St. S.E.

FYI - They need volunteers to help with the kids games.

Here's the note:

Subject: we need some more volunteers!

Hey gang,

This is a last minute effort to get some more volunteers! If you're not doing anything, we could use a hand in pulling this event off. (Thursday, 10/16, 4PM-8PM) We've scored a bunch of penny carnival-type games and we simply need some more people to run them... THAT, and you have to talk nice and smile to children. EASY, RIGHT? yeah, that's what I thought. See you there.

Shameless plug for haunted houses and Halloween events around Grand Rapids: http://www.grnow.com/index.php?option=com_...iew&id=1597. I think there are just under 20 haunted attractions listed and over 50 parties at the moment. With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, most of the big bars like The B.O.B. are having 4 nights in a row of costume parties.

I went to a hayride-bonfire-haunted forest-cornmaze event last weekend. Fun fun fun. The second year for this at Witches of New Salem (there are many more).

And I hope I never hear or see another hockey masked chainsaw dude. Ever.

Midtown Shop Hop

Thursday, December 4 5-9 pm

Centered around Fulton and Diamond. Big fun, with free trolley rides, the strolling Salvation Army Band (and a tag-alonger), product samples, refreshments. It's Christmas time in the city, busy sidewalks, the reason for urban living. You could leave a vehicle at the farmer's market and enjoy the pedestrian experience.

Hey, Gang -- There is an upcoming film screening this week that might be up the alley of the "green conscious" Urban Planeteers.

It is a movie called "Red Gold" about the Salmon fishery in Bristol Bay, Alaska, and how a proposed open-pit mine might put the whole thing at risk. It has been very well-received at a lot of film fests out west and in Alaska, but to the best of my knowledge, GR will be the first Midwest screening.

What - "Red Gold" Film showing

When - Wednesday, November 12 - 8:00pm

Where - Ladies Literary Club - 61 Sheldon Blvd SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Cost - Free (donations to Trout Unlimited encouraged)

You can find more about the film at www.redgoldfilm.com

And here is the trailer

Maybe a little late of a notice, but there will be a rally at Calder Plaza tomorrow (11/15) at 1:30pm to protest the passage of California's Prop 8. It is a local chapter of a nationwide protest of constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage in California, Florida, Arkansas, and Arizona.

Official Site

Facebook event

An amazing video (I had to throw this on here) of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.

There is also a candle-light vigil planned for 7pm, also at Calder Plaza.

Weds (tonight): Mardi Gras party at Chez Bayou, 9 pm -midnight.

Black Friday: Sale prices on adoptable pets at the local Humane Society! 11 am to 6 pm. This unique event will feature Doorbuster Coupons from 11 am to 1 pm, with great savings on adoption fees, HSKC retail items and pet microchip IDs. Also, in honor of the "Black Friday" shopping day, all animals with black fur will have reduced adoption fees.

Last year the agency ran out of all-black critters, and extended the discount to animals with black accents. They moved more than 60 animals, when usually the adopt-a-thon big events result in 40 placements.

Here's the volunteer sign-up spot:

Uptown Holiday Shop Hop today. Trolleys are running from 4-9 p.m. Hopefully people will come out in spite of the snow.

We'll be taking the #6 to Eastown and working our way back on foot. This has become a staple of our December calendar along with the UICA Holiday Artists' Market.

Heck, the snow makes it prettier and more festive!

This is Michigan. It is December. Warm footwear is available at any shoe retailer. People down south can only dream of a white Christmas or walking in a winter wonderland or letting it snow.

(has visited Houston and Louisiana for holidays, found all the Currier & Ives motifs ironical)

Jealous here! After 32 years of Southern Christmases - still can't get used to it. Of course, all my shopping was done on Monroe in the 60's & 70's. Enjoy yourselves!

It's a Wonderful Life at the Civic

Go

See

It.

No spoilers: Fun special effects (fog machines, twinkly lights, grey screen with magical stage dressing behind). Cool scenery and prop switches (how'd that piano roll offstage by itself?!?). Great singing, stage direction and background character play. at one point they fling some large confetti (cut-up tissue paper) and the first few rows of audience get this gentle sprinkle trickling down.

Sit far enough back to see the two up-high characters interacting with the stage stuff, and reacting to it. One guy is "on" for the whole production. But sit close enough to get the full effect of all the choregraphed dancing.

There's a two-wheeler in the first act, pretty well vintage for the represented time frame. (When you folks do Music Man, I have a perfect ride for ya.)

OK, one spoiler: Clarence earns his wings.

Performance Dates:

Wednesday, Dec 10
