Sunday's performance of Noises Off at the Circle Theatre will be a fundraiser for Uptown. Everybody is welcome. Tickets are $25 and available at most Uptown businesses (Wealthy @ Charles, Art of the Table, and Urban Pharm for sure). PM me if you're interested. I hear the show is amazing.

Anyone with an interest in community gardens and urban farming might do well to go to UICA tomorrow for a screening of this Oscar-nominated documentary:

"Come to UICA this Tuesday at 7PM and see a special screening of the Garden, with a discussion by GRIID. The discussion will be about the issues raised in the documentary and what people are doing in West Michigan to confront those same issues. Local organizations who promote and practice urban gardening/farming will also have information tables at this screening."

If you miss it tomorrow, you can also see it Wednesday.

I haven't posted the first few rides in here, but thought I'd start:

PedalGR - 6/10/09 - The 2009 Blandford Edition

PedalGR, meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 6/10/2009 at Founder's Brewing Company, 235 Grandville Ave SW.

National Bike Month is over. I hope you had a chance to ride your bike at the Mayor's Ride, Bike to Work Week, or the Ride of Silence. If not, just grab a friend and get out and ride! While not great for the beach, this cooler weather is great bicycling weather.

This week's PedalGR ride will include a trip to Blandford Nature Center. We will make a quick stop at the wetland observation tower and then head over to their 50 acre farm where staff member Nick Cunigan will tell us about their Youth Farm Team and the Mixed Greens on-site urban agriculture programs they run at six local elementary schools. We'll also be riding through three cool old cemeteries and visiting one of the best lookouts over the downtown skyline. You NEED to be at this ride!

GR's Navy Reserve Center will be hosting the Stars & Stripes 5K on July 18th in Riverside Park. As the release says below, register by the 20th to be guaranteed a T-shirt.

Stars & Stripes 5K and Kid's Fun Run

Cost is $20 with t-shirt and $15 without t-shirt. No guarantee of a t-shirt after June 20, 2009 registrations.

Kids Fun Run (10 and under), free with adult entry.

7/8/9! The Ride That's a Punchline.

That's right folks! Don't miss your once in a century opportunity to ride on a date that's a punchline to a bad laffy taffy joke! (PedalGR is a fan of bad jokes, I blame my uncles!) Plus, you won't be able to go on a bicycle ride on a date that you can count until 8/9/10, and that's over a year away.

This week we'll be looping around Reeds Lake, hitting some neighborhoods that PedalGR has never visited and some that our regulars will know well. We'll see some great big houses on Bonnell Ave, descend a hidden staircase on the NE side, and visit a fantastic lookout over downtown. You also won't want to miss seeing possibly the coolest treehouse in Metro Grand Rapids. We'll end the ride cruising down the Michigan St. hill before heading back to cold beers at Founders. I'm eyeing an Imperial Stout.

I kind of wanted to go to this show, but the fact that they weren't able to attract any of the World Class Corps this year because the show is so close to DCI Finals makes it not as much worth the time and effort.

It'd be like going to a WhiteCaps game when what I really want to see are the Tigers. They are great at what they do...but there is a whole other level above them.

Wish we were in town for this. (I can't complain sitting in Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City enjoying a delicious Honey Basil Ale) I believe there is an upcoming Lunch-n-Learn being planned for this property and I'm hoping to attend that.

To kick off the Michigan Film Festival (not to be confused with the Grand Rapids Film Festival going on at the same time), GRAM will be holding "Movie Night in the Park" at Rosa Parks Circle every Friday in August.

From the WMFVA:

August is dedicated to the "Art of Cinema" during Friday Nights at GRAM outdoor summer series.

Every week features live music from Rosa Parks Circle stage beginning at 5pm. Movie-related presentations are at 7:00, swing dancing begins at 7:45 followed by an outdoor feature film screening at 10pm.

Final weekend in August is the Michigan Film Festival, hosted by GRAM & UICA, with a presentation by Rich Brauer at 7pm Friday, August 28. Brauer was recently named Michigan Filmmaker of the Year, an award presented by Michael Moore at the Traverse City Film Festival. Brauer's film "Mr. Art Critic," starring Bronson Pinchot and filmed on Mackinac Island, will screen in the park later that evening to help kick-off the Michigan Film Festival.
