Are there any strict rules to prevent housing and other new developments along this new route... to make sure history doesn't repeat itself?

Isn't there already development proposed along this new road? But, development itself didn't create the problems of Woodruff Road. It was largely lack of connectivity and poor planning.

Map of the new Parallel Parkway at https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/34.83170/-82.31147

That map needs an upgrade. Gattitown has been out of business several years, was not located where the Holiday Inn Express is, and Palmetto State Armory has been in the same location (former Gattitown building) several years now, not in the old Capel Rugs/Spectrum space.

Yes. We could see Woodruff Road's problems coming long, really long, before they got serious.

Thanks - it seems that those updating the map have avoided Woodruff Road because it's too crowded

There is actually a plan to severely limit curb cuts, and future growth would feed in only via one of the unused roundabout connectors.

I look forward to diving into this further. I hope the County has the guts to actually put some teeth into whatever comes out of this. In their population growth visual, it's interesting to pick out downtown and you can see the impact of Verdae's build out as well.

FINALLY!!!

According to Leslie Fletcher, spokesperson for the city, there are still plans to replace dozens of street lights downtown with updated lights and work will begin pretty soon.

Fletcher said approximately 105 lights are being replaced from E. North Street to Broad Street.

The work will be done in four different phases in order to minimize disruptions to businesses along that stretch, Fletcher said.

The city has already ordered fixtures and poles. The next step is to schedule the installation, which Fletcher said would likely begin after the first of the year because the city doesn't want to start a project like that during the busy holiday shopping season.

Fletcher said depending on the weather, each phase should take about five to six weeks.

Do we know which fixture they decided on going with? I had forgotten that they never got around to this. Wasn't Duke Energy funding some of this?

The end is upon us!

The South Carolina Department of Transportation will cut the ribbon Friday on a major milestone in the almost-four-year traffic ordeal called the Gateway Project.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 10 a.m. on the new 85-385 interchange's construction site, near Roper Mountain Road, according to SCDOT spokesman Bob Kudelka.

Officials will celebrate the completion of the project's final interstate bridge and new ramp to Woodruff Road from I-385 southbound.

Drivers have been coping with detours and slowdowns since the project began in 2016.

Which option did they go with for Woodruff?

This one:

https://www.scdot.org/projects/WoodruffRoad/pdfs/Display of the Preferred Alternative Design.pdf?v=2

The Preferred Alternative would provide a five-lane limited-access alternate route to Woodruff Road from Verdae Boulevard to Smith Hines Road (approximately 3 miles), while improving numerous intersections and access points along Woodruff Road. The new location route would include four travel lanes with a sidewalk on one side and a multiuse pathway on the other side, and a raised or planted median. The Preferred Alternative would also:
• Widen Woodruff Bypass from two to four lanes from Verdae Boulevard to Woodruff Industrial Lane
• Improve Thousand Oaks Boulevard to five lanes
• Construct a new bridge over I-385 and I-85
• Construct roundabouts along various intersections including: Woodruff Industrial Lane; Carolina Point Parkway; Market Point Drive; Miller Road;
Thousand Oaks Boulevard; and Smith Hines Road
• Improve intersections along Woodruff Road at Verdae Boulevard, Ketron Court, Green Heron Road, Woodruff Industrial Lane, Miller Road, and Smith Hines Road
