The City of Greenville is requesting SEALED bids from qualified contractors for the Haywood Road Sidewalk Improvements Project.  The work under this contract will consist of adding approximately 1470 linear feet of sidewalk from the Haywood Mall entrance to the existing sidewalk at the entrance of Haverty’s along the east side of the highway.  The proposed improvements include constructing a five-foot-wide sidewalk, variable curb lawn, and handicap ramps at all entrances/exits to the surrounding businesses if none currently exist.

The project is federally funded through a participation agreement with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and has a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Contract Goal of 12% that the contractor MUST meet.

A NON-MANDATORY pre-bid meeting will be held via WebEx on Wednesday, March 17, 2020 at 10:00 am.  Contractors wishing to attend the pre-bid meeting should call 1-415-655-0002; Meeting Access Code: 129 712 1967.

Who in their right mind would walk on a sidewalk along Haywood Road.

You may be attempting humor, but seriously: bus riders, and the many residents in the area who would prefer not to have to exercise (run/jog/walk) or ride their bicycles in the actual street. One day, they'll have the option to safely reach the SRT.

I saw on Instagram this week that the City of Greenville planted 51 new trees in the median along Verdae Blvd. This is a great enhancement to the street, and a great investment in the city's long-term aesthetic appeal and health. According to the post, this is a part of the City's initiative to plant 1,000 trees annually.

Out of curiosity: even if city-funded,  would the state DOT be an obstacle to making similar improvements to other corridors (i.e.  South Pleasantburg) that are WAY too much pavement?

I noticed automatic road analyzer (ARAN) vehicles in just about every part of Greenville, Pickens, and Anderson Counties during the last week.  I am thankful to have found evidence of potential future road maintenance.

By the way, we have been blessed with some very beautiful rural countryside in the Upstate, and the roads outside the more densely populated areas aren't all full of potholes and litter.

Regarding : https://www.foxcarolina.com/news/greenville-city-council-approves-250-000-for-pedestrian-safety-projects/article_47b34dd2-c7df-11eb-8f22-7f358dd2bdc0.html ( Greenville City Council Approves $250,000 for pedestrian safety projects)

Does anyone have a resource to see what projects are in the pipeline that this would provide funding for?

From the article:

Officials say that improvement options that are under consideration include:

  • Traffic signal controls to include adaptive technology to manage speeds
  • Rumble strips along the centerline to alert drivers if their vehicle is veering
  • Intersection improvements
  • Pedestrian signal crossings
  • Sidewalk widening to create multi-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists
  • ADA ramps
  • Lane reduction or “road diet”

The scope of the improvements is still taking shape, but Mayor Knox White said he has pitched the idea of expanding the sidewalk on one side to create a protected bike and pedestrian lane with a buffer of planter boxes.

City and SCDOT staff are also discussing upgrading the railings and lighting system and completing a fresh paint job, said Greenville public works director Clint Link.

That’s great. I’ve always felt they should do a trail extension along the bridge to start a new spur. There could be a couple overlook areas at the highest point in the bridge.

Thanks for the overview! I've actually be quite surprised at how many walkers and runners I've seen traversing the bridge recently.
