Bike Sharing in Greenville

JCT

Recommended Posts

It has been discussed from time to time, but now we have a chance to really push for a bike sharing program in Greenville. B-cycle is a collaboration between Trek, Humana, and Crispin Porter+ Bogusky, which is now being implemented in Denver in a few other US cities. Check out the website for more info - http://www.bcycle.com

Please take a minute to go to http://www.bcycle.com/who_wants_it_more and click the “I want it more” button to enter your address and increase the number of people who are interested in bringing B-cycle to Greenville. Make sure you check the box to tell the Mayor as well. Right now Greenville is in 4th place overall ahead of quite a few big cities. Let's keep adding names to the list until we are the number 1 spot. Use the “tell a friend” button to help spread the word as well. A bike-sharing program really would be great here.

Same here. Over the past few hours Greenville has really picked up some votes!

Yesterday morning we had 5 votes (2 of which were me and my wife) and now we are well over 200. Chalk it up to the power of the web and email lists. I think we have a shot at #1 if we keep spreading the word.

Thanks to everyone who has added their name so far.

Amazing all the onesie and twosies from the surrounding surburban communities of Greenville. Would have been nice if this map only allowed voting for metro areas as a whole.

Good point! Some of those surrounding communities are growing fast as well. Simpsonville had 6 last time I checked. They take that into consideration when looking at the input coming in. I heard from someone at B-cycle yesterday, and they are definitely noticing what is happening in Greenville. They mentioned us in a tweet as well @bcycle.

Keep spreading the word and add your name if you haven't already. We are just a few short of passing Oklahoma City and moving into 3rd nationwide. Pretty impressive for a town this size.

Haven't been online in a couple of days. Just checked, and at some point over the weekend, Greenville went to number 1. Way to go! Keep it up!

Same here. I was traveling last week and didn't check the map for a while. What a pleasant surprise to be in the #1 spot already. Thanks to everyone who added their name.

Still number one and still climbing in numbers.

When does the winner get announced?

"Who wants it more?" is an ongoing page on the B-cycle website, so a winner will not be officially announced. It is not really a contest, but more of a tool that we can use to show our local government officials and potential advertisers that there is interest for the program here in Greenville. A representative from B-cycle has already met with a group of City employees. At this point, we just need to keep expressing our support for the project.

This is great news that Greenville and B-Cycle have met! B-Cycle rocks! I can't think of a more fitting match for such a relationship than Greenville.

Any news on this? I just read an article about the B-cycle program moving ahead in Denver.

No news lately about B-cycle in Greenville, but we have dropped to third on the "who wants it more" list. I don't think it is the city's highest priority right now with all the other things going on, but it doesn't hurt to keep spreading the word about voting.

The program officially launches today in Denver, so it will be interesting to hear how it is received and utilized there.

It looks like they reset the count. We now only have 2 votes and Spartanburg has 34! To be honest, I'm getting tired of these polls where you have to vote every day. There's got to be a better way to gauge enthusiasm than having people vote every day. As the Google Voice poll showed, anonymous raw votes aren't worth that much. Maybe if people could send emails or sign a petition where the votes could be reasonably tied to real people, these things would have more value.

There must be a problem with the map page. As it is loading, it shows that we have 564 votes, but then it shifts to 2 when the map fills in. In both cases, it indicates that we are in tenth place nationwide behind mostly bigger cities.

The voting for this map used to be tied to email and physical addresses, so you could only vote once, but maybe they have changed it. Or maybe they are just having site problems in conjunctions with the official launch of the program today. If it is not working again in a few days, I'll find out what is going on.

I am not against this program and I know I am going to be slammed for this but I am only providing info

google the program, and youtube it, youtube has a few videos of people destroying the bikes

these are just a few of the articles I came across, I seem to remember another European country replacing all of the bikes {at tax payer expense} because of theft and vandals.

I think that is certainly a danger, and whether intentionally damaged or just regular wear and tear, maintenance will certainly be required. However, I still think it's a great program and provides a lot of potential for the residents and visitors to Greenville, not to mention the environmental benefits.

Having taken part in such offerings across Europe, I support Greenville pursuing an opportunity to implement such a program. Bike lane networks and trails are reaching a very supportive stage, I think, and will only improve into the future.

Interesting and sad to see. There must be a way to track the bikes / keep vandalism from happening in this age of advanced electronics. :dontknow:

It is true that a small amount of theft and vandalism is to be expected with a system like this, but I don't think it has been nearly as bad in cities around the world as some sources have made it out to be. Many of the articles about the Velib system in Paris followed a BBC story that exaggerated the problems quite a bit (More on that in this Streetsblog post).

Unfortunately, vandalism does happen. Greenville has seen destruction of some of the downtown public art for example, but that does not deter the city from continuing with those kinds of projects. It definitely is something to be aware of and to plan for though. When you do anything positive, there are always a few bad apples intent on messing it up.
