Another bar/restaurant bites the dust

To me this actually makes it more egregious.  I don’t know these people and didn’t know anything about this until I read it this morning.  But I’ve seen this sentiment posted all over the place today.

It’s apparent he’s well known for this type of activity.  So to hear her very real allegations dismissed as “he said she said” and effectively being scolded by Chris like they were children, it’s a real bad look.  Real bad.

We need the fine people at Charlotte Stories to bring us the nitty gritty details only their world class journalists are capable of.

LOLLLL, real talk though. It's a bad look for the management of the market which is already very negatively received. I hope this doesn't negatively impact the other businesses though. this is on Chris and Adam

One of the first things that popped in my mind is how angry I would be as another vendor there.

Popped in there last Thursday for lunch.  Incredibly busy and the extension will only help.  I hate this situation (truly) but I love the Market even though I visit infrequently.  The only way to hurt this would be to drive the good vendors out (because it's already too small to meet the demand).

Kinda makes me glad they're still having so many issues getting food started at the NoDa location.  Last time I went, they didn't even have coffee

A spokesperson for Dean & Deluca's corporate office in Kansas City said the company had not expected the Phillips Place closing and that "it's becoming a legal action."

Anyone know the scoop here? Seems like they would have to be pretty late/far behind on rent to have the doors locked.

D&D Uptown and Stonecrest are closing as well.

I know I can be in my own world sometimes, but I can't stop thinking of this place as "so 90's". It didn't occur to me that other people still like it. It's even more useless now that it's owned by some distant, foreign entity.

Are people all up in arms about the closings?

why is it so nineties? Sure its heyday was in the 90s, but it as a concept is very current.

I'm facking pissed... I go multiple times a week and it's not 90's :tw_bawling:

When I used to work in SoHo I practically lived at the original Dean & Deluca. I don't understand what people wouldn't like about it. How is a place with AWESOME sandwiches, bread, fruit, veggies, prepared food, wine, beer, cheese, dessert, pastries considered "90s." Its been a pretty iconic brand for 40 years.

Not devastated

They aren't closing... At least for now, but it looks like it'll happen in the near future.

I’m with @HighRiseHillbilly on this one.  I imagine Dean and Deluca as a place where women with shoulder padded blazers do business deals on a cellphone the size of a pineapple.

to be fair, I found out about Dean & Deluca from watching Sex in the City with an ex girlfriend 12 years ago, so this is kinda applicable to this aesthetic.

I really don't know. I did start that whole thing off saying I'm often in my own world.

I abhor the idea of life sustaining food as a "trend", but in my mind, this place....well, shoulder pads and pineapple phones.

Back in November 2017, when  Dean & Deluca's owners canceled the leases for 3 new stores in New York and the new store in the Dallas area, the Pace Corp spokesperson said: " “The company is investing in the strategic reassessment required to solve legacy issues and the current challenges that are facing brands in the retail sector,” Pace wrote."

Fast forward to April 2018 and apparently that reinvestment looks like defaulting on your lease payments and closing your Southeast stores. They are now down to 4 stores in NYC, 1 in Washington DC, 2 in Honolulu, 1 in California, and 1 in Kansas. The international stores are now under new ownership, but have access to the name. They could likely sell the New York stores to another owner. I wouldn't be surprised to see DC, Honolulu, California, and Kansas close. There are no synergies operating just 1 store in such distance locations in retail. There is a reason most chains start regional before going national.

The brand is probably viable, but I think Pace Dev Corp just has 0 experience in American retail and you have a corporate office on the outskirts of Witchita, Kansas surrounded by fields and a Phillips 66 oil facility (not exactly a mecca for trendy expensive food), where the employees are out of touch with their end-markets.
