Has anyone noticed there really isn’t a Chinese take out place in south end now that Beijing is gone (Hawkers doesn’t count).  I don’t even think Dilworth either (Two Thai spots, and Konichiwa which is Japanese

Its not traditional Chinese but Pursuasian is OK.

I generally schlepped  over to Taipei Express instead of Beijing.

RIP The Royal Tot...

I think it was mismanaged, too expensive and they didn't have a clear vision... average basic cocktail (i.e. Mai Tai) was $16

Bit of a random question, but does anyone know all of the restaurants that used to be part of the (now defunct?) Sonoma Restaurant group?

There was Aria, Sonoma, Pie Town, and I believe there were two other restaurants, one more mid-market Italian and possibly a fish/seafood place.

He also owned City Smoke (which I thought was OK) and Blue (which seemed kinda flavorless on my two trips), and a couple of others (was Sonoma where the Kings Kitchen is now? He had something that was good in that slot for a few years). I feel like there were a couple of others?

Not really relevant: I heard through a convoluted grapevine that he developed a reputation with the Customs folks at CLT of regularly bringing undeclared (and uncured) meats back from Europe.

Nobody here noticed (or cared enough to mention) that Hot Taco in Southend bit the dust. That pretty much sums up my feelings about the place.

It will be replaced by Myraya, a Columbian tapas place.

Jason Thomas posted about it end of June, but this new place looks solid.

Not sure if dust has technically been bitten yet, but this does not bode well.  CBJ reporting Cantina 1511 suddenly closed both locations “temporarily”…

“The closures come after the restaurant faced financial woes in March 2022, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Quantum faced challenges that started during Covid and continued after, with inflation diving up operating expenses and labor costs.

That case was dismissed by the U.S.  Bankruptcy Court, Western District of North Carolina, in December. The court found dismissal to be in the best interest of creditors, according to a filing by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laura Beyer.

The dismissal came after efforts to sell three Cantina locations fell through. Quantum conceded a lack of sale prospects and lack of profitability at the time.”

In this city of dining "concepts" and "restaurant groups" (investors) it was refreshing to have a neighborhood place with personal flair. After the switch to Burger/Bakeshop I lost interest but admired her persistence. So few like her.

If anyone has best suggestions for chef owned experience fine dining please offer them here.

edit: The Stanley and Heirloom were favorites and both now gone. Resto Constance I know.

Eight and Sand Kitchen's last day will be Sunday, January 14th, They did a really good square deep dish focaccia bread pizza. Sadly, they abandoned pizza about two years ago. Their brunch was passable but unremarkable.

Do you think it was the rent?

I'm not sure. I would imagine only serving brunch could be limiting for maximizing profit. When I was there pre-Covid, late spring they were hopping for dinner. After they went only brunch I get the impression traffic dwindled.

CBJ also reported that the owner has chosen to devote his energy to expanding his Inzio Pizza brand. Based on how much I spend on takeout at Inzio I would think its sales/sq ft are substantially better than E&S.

I was going to say  between Inizio and E&S as well as Not Just Coffee being a part of this and now also having their separate brand Night Swim it seems like a pivot back for the owners to their core competencies.  It always seemed to be doing well when I went or walked by on weekends.
