I-10 widening to affect access to Perkins Road businesses

The Perkins Road overpass area could look drastically different in a few years if the state successfully implements its plan to cut off the existing interchange and add a new multi-use path. The revamp is part of LADOTD’s plan to widen I-10.

The new layout would restrict interstate access to the larger ramps on South Acadian Thruway, less than a half-mile away. That would free up space behind the businesses on Perkins between Baywood and Glendale avenues to extend Greenwood Drive as a two-lane road and add a bike/pedestrian path.

Any business that existed before I-10 was built has a legitimate beef - which is none of them.

Everyone else should have known that those looming spans would eventually have to be overhauled and replaced.   Infrastructure that services hundreds of thousands of people every day can't be ignored because some businesses are going to be closer to the highway than before.    And it's not a significant burden to enter/exit the highway at Acadian (around the corner) instead of the under-utilized Perkins exit.

It would be more wise to expend political capital ensuring that proper lighting and parking were constructed under the spans and that sound/noise issues are considered in the design.

Chad Hughes trying to rezone former overpass Cracker Barrel site

https://www.businessreport.com/newsletters/chad-hughes-trying-to-rezone-former-cracker-barrel-site-on-perkins

The vacant property, located at the corner of Perkins and Hollydale Avenue, had been the longtime home of a Cracker Barrel service station before Circle K shut it down last September.

Yes indeed Cajun!  That's a nice little tract of land Perkins  @ Ferndale     ...Would be cool to see some street level retail with residential units above it ; maybe 3 floors?  Maybe like the 3-story building to the right

Took  a random pic from nearby last week (sorry full building not shown) .....

Cool!

BTW...have you guys had Jeni's Ice Cream?   It's big in the midwest and it's now expanded out to California.    Seriously the best I've ever had.    Wish they'd open a spot in Baton Rouge.

Perkins Road Overpass businesses brace for I-10 widening project’s impending impact

Overpass Merchant will be spared; Fresh Salon to be bought out

https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/business/article_ca625c6c-98e2-11ec-98fe-d32bd382e89f.html

Four years after it was announced, the I-10 project is still lingering in the minds of anxious yet optimistic Perkins overpass business owners. Construction, which is scheduled for 2023, could paralyze their available parking and access points — which weren’t abundant to begin with.

But the businesses contacted by The Advocate said they still cherish the neighborhood, and they know Baton Rouge’s traffic woes must be fixed — even though it could hurt their bottom line for several years.

The Department of Transportation and Development says final design documents should be ready sometime in 2022, with construction beginning next year and major lane restrictions scheduled for 2024.

The wish list for Perkins at I-10 is long: The on and off ramps will be removed; new parking spaces will be added and existing spaces under the interstate will be renovated; Greenwood Drive will be extended; and a walking trail accessible from both the overpass and the Acadian Village Shopping Center will be built.

Business owners present plans to beautify Perkins Road underpass, hope to rally community support

https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/article_15fb04cc-a490-11ec-9fd0-0bce8bfb3a78.html

Four businesses are lobbying to turn the drab, dusty stretch of Perkins Road where they operate into a pedestrian friendly pathway with green space.

The owners of Varsity Sports, BLDG 5, Moreau Physical Therapy and Ivar's Sports Bar presented plans to beautify the road between Reymond Avenue and Christian Street in hopes of rallying community support.

Renderings created by Carbo Landscape and Architecture showed additional lighting underneath the Perkins Road underpass, pathways lined with vegetation and reorganized parking. The reorganized parking wouldn't significantly reduce the number of available spaces, a concern for some residents and business owners in the busy area.

Cool!

Let's turn the I-10 widening into an opportunity to revamp the area and improve the quality of life (sound walls, better lighting, landscaping, covered parking, etc.)
