I knew that the Dominican Republic was number one, we had polling places in Rhode Island for the recent Dominican presidential election, and there was a huge response to recent flooding there. I think Providence is a sister city with Santo Domingo.

I'm surprised that Cape Verde and Haiti aren't higher. And I'm also surprised by the number of people from Portugal proper. That probably reflects immigration from the Azores though, the Azores is an integral part of Portugal, not an independent country like Cape Verde.

There was a reference to portugese immigrants on "Family Guy" last night, which is based in Rhode Island. I would have never gotten that, if not for this board.

There's a lot you don't get about Family Guy unless you live here, or someone like me tells you. Family Guy is like a religion in Rhode Island. :)

^The northeast definately a favorite place for Dominicans to migrate to they are like the new Puerto Ricans it seems as well as Guatemalans! Another place that seems to attract a lot of Dominicans relative to its size suprisingly is Alaska its in their top 10 they dont recieve no where near as many as the N.E. but they recieve about half as many as Cali a much much larger state per year.

BTW #4 is still really high for Cape Verde especially being that its a small country and to make that kind of impact is pretty amazing!

I wonder how much the Iraqi immigration rate has dropped off since 9/11. Detroit has the highest population of middle easterners outside of the middle east, although I would imagine that the immigration rate has slowed in the past couple of years. Now Detroit is seeing a larger number of Mexicans immigrating, with the immigration rate of Mexicans doubling in the period between 1990 and 2000.

^Hmmm i think you'd have to specify Middle Easterners because I think with the combination of LA's huge Iranian population along with its Arab population is probably larger than Detroits Middle Eastern population. Detroit does have the largest Syriac/Assyrian pop in the US and a couple others though i did the research and posted it a while back at SSP but its probably gone now.
