Many people do not know that 'The Cleveland Show'(Fox) and 'Doug'(Nickelodeon)(Disney) are both based on life in Richmond, VA. Both writers Mike Henry(TCS) and Jim Jinkins(Doug) are from the area!

"Calling all Cartoonists"

Do you think YOU have what it takes to be a published cartoonist?

weblogo300.jpg

Do you think YOU have something humorous or perceptive to say about Richmond — the people, the places, the politics, the social codes, the business community, the river, the hipsters, the new and totally constitutional Noise Ordinance or what have you?

Do YOU like to win free stuff?

If so, we invite YOU to send us your best Richmond-related comic strip for Style Weekly’s Comic Strip Sweepstakes.

The winning entry (along with selected finer runners-up) will be printed in the July 21 issue of Style — our first-ever Comic Strip Issue — and will receive $100 in free art supplies.

Rules and regulations:

1. Participating entries must be submitted to Style Weekly, 1313 E. Main Street, Richmond, Va. 23219 by 5 p.m. on July 12, 2010. If you are emailing your entry, please send to [email protected] in .jpeg format at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

2. Entries must touch upon subjects pertaining to -- or that reference -- the greater Richmond area.

3. Entries may be in color or black & white. Single panel or multi panel. Photo collages, fumetti, computer art and other kinds of comic forms other than pen and ink are also eligible.

4. Entries must conform to, or be able to reduce to, specified sizes (see below).

5. While we don’t want to censor anyone, it should be noted that Style Weekly is distributed to a wide array of Central Virginia readers. Therefore, it’s reasonable for ask participating artists to curb excessive profanity and/or extreme violence and sex.

6. Employees of Style Weekly and Landmark Communications are not eligible to enter the Comic Strip contest, nor are family members of employees.

7. Have fun out there.

This is a spoof on the recently passed law in Virginia that allow patrons to bring their handguns into restaurants and bar establishments but they will not be able to drink! Yeah this is really going to work!

Previously, the law did not limit anyone from carrying and drinking, but the firearm had to be openly carried. All this law has done is allow the vast majority of responsible carriers, who do not drink while carrying, to conceal in a restaurant serving alcohol. Anyone who would violate this would have done so even when concealed carry was not legal in restaurants/clubs with an ABC ON license, as they do not follow the law in the first place (and most likely do not even possess a concealed carry permit). The only change here is that patrons are better able to defend themselves in and around the restaurant and less firearms will be sitting in unsecured vehicles.

I hope there is a provision in that newly passed law that gives restaurants and bars THEIR right to bar entry, under heavy penalty, to anyone carrying arms -- concealed or otherwise.

Businesses have always had the right to ban firearms from their establishments, though once again, this would not prevent criminals anyway.

Richmond's mass transit options!

“The Red Line repairs, which we announced in November, are necessary to improve transit times and should speed up the commute for those riders transferring from the Green and Purple lines onto the Red,” said Bixby, speaking from the RTS’s brand new, 38-story, $197 million headquarters on East Franklin Street. “While the Red Line is under construction, I am proud to say that we are are offering a discounted rate of 50 cents for all travelers who wish to use the James River ferry system.”

"That Building not State Capitol"

No matter what some Richmonders and city visitors might think, that big beautiful white building overlooking the James River is not the Virginia State Capitol, sources confirmed today.

“Nope, it’s known as the Ethyl building, though the company recently changed its name to NewMarket,” said local know-it-all Charles Farrar Jr., who went on to explain that the actual Virginia State Capitol is roughly a half-mile due north of the building that only looks like the Virginia State Capitol. “I don’t know what they do [at Ethyl] though. By the looks of the building, I’d say it’s something either really important or really pretty.”

"Children at Kings Dominion Told They Are at Disney World"

Looking to save money in a down economy, Chesterfield County parents Greg and Andrea McGlaughlin convinced their three young children on Saturday that a 30-minute ride north to Kings Dominion was actually a week-long trip to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Fla.
