Some interesting history on what we call the Tryon Plaza at 112 S Tryon.  People blame the expensive building in the 1920s $1.8 Million cost that caused the bank failure of the First National Bank that was there.

Photo I recently took.  Building to left.

Whoa, I totally didn't realize that all four original photos overlapped.  Here's the complete stitch:

Wow! That makes it all much clearer. Jigsaw!

There was a post over in Nashville UP about Atlanta claiming that they were one of the earliest country music centers.   Obviously that rankled the Nashville folks.

Whoa Nellie!  Charlotte was THE country music capital for 20+ plus years.

Oh my we have a problem here. If any city in the south outside of Nashville has country music roots it is Charlotte!  And if you walk down South Tryon there is a historical marker I think on the 2nd or 3rd block south.

We had a clear channel radio station too 1110 WBT however due to another station in Nebraska or somewhere the 100K watt station goes north and south only at night.  That is one reason  why the Grand Ole Opry set up in Nashville.  But we really did record a lot of country music in Charlotte too.

Great post @KJHburg

Here's a related story by Chuck McShane that appeared in the December 2014 issue of Charlotte Magazine, confirming your thesis that in the depths of the Great Depression, Charlotte (not Nashville) was the center of country music.  Link;  http://www.charlottemagazine.com/Charlotte-Magazine/January-2015/The-Story-of-Charlotte-Part-9-Radio-Signals/

Wilkinson Blvd in 1968 and 2008. Many of those old buildings along Wilkinson are still there. I wish Clear Sky had a more recent pic from this angle.

Great shot!  Thanks.  I'm guessing WBTV's studios would've been in both too.

The Doctors Building...built in the 1940s...apparently the owners decided the renovation costs were too excessive to update it to current standards as a medical office building...and thus the demolition

Thanks. I found this site that has more info on it.
