Fenton will open without a grocer as Wegmans pulled out but they are still paying rent there.  From the Triangle Biz Journal

""The huge Fenton development in Cary has a Phase 1 grand opening date of April 1, but the retail space meant for a grocery store will be empty for the foreseeable future.  The first phase of the mixed-use development led by commercial real estate firms Hines and Columbia Development will feature 345,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space, 200,000 square feet of office space, a 175-key hotel and a 357-unit apartment community. Though the retail space is close to 90 percent leased – not including the grocer space – the 125,000-square-foot space meant for a grocery store won’t have an operating tenant for likely another year, Dotan Zuckerman, VP of leasing at Columbia Development, said.  New York-based Wegmans had signed a lease for the space but in early 2021 pulled out of its plan to open a store in Fenton. The grocer, with four stores currently operating in the Triangle and one more planned, said at the time that the decision was made based on the strong performance of its existing stores in the area and the ability of its delivery service to reach customers.  Since Wegmans dropped out, a new grocery chain has yet to sign on to the Fenton development. Though Wegmans does not have to open a physical store in the space, the company is still on the hook for the lease that was signed, Zuckerman said.""

Fenton update from well Fenton itself"

We know the Triangle community is eager to experience Fenton, and we can’t wait to welcome you! We are excited to announce that our first retailers will open on April 29. Through June 3, the public is invited to enjoy a first look at the project during our soft opening period. In the coming weeks, we will share a full list of retailers that will open in April, May and early June.

We will host Fenton’s grand opening events on June 4-5, when the majority of shops and restaurants are open. We look forward to offering a first glimpse of Fenton this spring, with a landmark celebration to follow this summer.

Since breaking ground on Fenton in November 2020, our development team – a joint venture between Hines, Columbia Development and USAA – has reached extraordinary construction and leasing milestones throughout the pandemic. The retail component at Fenton is now over 90% leased and we recently announced our first office tenant. Construction at The Allison, our multifamily offering, is progressing and pre-leasing is expected to begin soon. There are many other thrilling announcements in the works that we look forward to sharing with the Cary community in the weeks to come.

After years of hard work, we can’t wait to welcome the community to this one-of-a-kind mixed-use district. For the latest updates and event details, follow us on social media and let us know what you’re most excited to experience at Fenton!

This is a very interesting fact about Cary and its population vs Raleigh

""Cary has exploded from 22,000 residents in 1980 to 177,000 today. To put that in perspective, Cary is bigger now than Raleigh was in 1984 (173,000).""

it was in this story about their new Downtown Park which I think is one of the best urban spaces in NC

""The Downtown Park has been two decades in the making, and now the scope of the six acres of the new project is clear as wide swaths of dirt have been moved and structures are taking shape. The park is adjacent to the downtown library, close by the Cotton House brewpub and easily walkable to the Cary Theater and The Mayton hotel. Once completed in 2023, the park will feature a "great lawn" and a tiered water feature as well as places to stroll and relax and even let dogs play.""

Atlanta does have the leg up on the airport issue but I would say that is all they have better than the Triangle.  The Triangle has a great soccer culture and great facilities in Cary and elsewhere.  Plus it is a less hassle to get around to the airport from Cary than from most places in the Atlanta metro area where 45 min to 1 hour or more trips to the airport are common.  In Cary we are talking 15 minutes.

in other news the NC Chinese Lantern Festival in Cary attracted a record crowd.

here are some of my own photos from a Dec. visit and I would highly recommend it.
