Downtown Orlando Project Discussion

JYP is nearly a limited access road already from I-4 to Colonial. There was some talk a year or two ago about an overpass over Colonial. I thought it was funded already too. The section from 441 to I-4 would be nearly impossible to fix though.

You mean Lee Road?

I agree, it's beyond fixing. I work off of it.

Completely unrelated , but it seems the layout for the East Toll Plaza on 408 is well underway. These highspeed tolls are so necessary, they make going through tolls less like getting robbed by an unorganized, money grubbing, corrupt expressway authority. And more like a nice morning on the Autobahn, once complete my only concern will be "did I spill coffee on myself as I breezed through that toll at a buck fity?" "Damn I did"

the 408 widening portion west of I-4 has really transformed that road from a trashy backwards outdated typical florida road. night and day. imagine what the eastern portion will look like.

Not densely settled? Are we talking about the same road? 436 is lined with businesses from the Airport to well past 434. I'm all for foresight, but it would be like turning 17-92 into an expressway.

I used to live over in Pinellas county. They could turn 436 into the same type of road US 19 became.

Does anyone know what going on with the construction on/next to I-4 at the St. Johns river bridge in Sanford? It looks like they're getting kind of serious. Is it a ramp for 17-92? The piles they're driving go right up to Lake Monroe. (I'm guessing they're piles. I don't work in the industry) :)

Yes, new redesigned off ramp taking you from Eastbound I-4 directly onto 17/92. It will allow you to avoid the intersections and provide an uninterupted merge onto 17/92 going Northeast. I'm not sure about heading Southwest onto 17/92, but think it is addressed as well.

At the very least, some express lanes should be made along the 436 route from MCO to the 408 to provide a direct link from the airport to downtown.

Several years ago there was talk of elevating SR 436 between MCO and the 408 for just that purpose, not really sure if it got much further than the initial planning study and they figured it wouldn't fly due to community opposition or if it was too expensive.

We need a light rail going from downtown to I-drive then to the airport. It will help downtown development and definitely help release traffic on Idrive. I remember reading the cost to build the line from downtown to I-drive is like 1 billions.

Any chance that the residents would vote to increase taxes by a penny to build that?

The state and the local governments have cobbled together a commuter rail plan that would run from Deltona? to Polk County. I think the initial segment would be from Sanford to just south of SeaWorld. The state recently brokered a deal with CSX for their rail line. Which is shocking to say the least. However, the state has only agreed to pay for the first 7 years of maintenance on the tracks and will then turn ownership to the local governments (Lynx I would presume would be the central agency). That was snag one, snag two was all the talk going around up in Tallahassee right now about property tax reforms. Some of the major players, Orange County Commission, are now running a bit scared and are making grumblings about being able to pay for commuter rail. Congressman Mica was able to get 50% of the costs funded by the feds.

After watching Light Rail go down in flames back in 99 (thank you Mel Martinez), I will try not to get my hopes up again.

there's a thread devoted to the rail subject. the website is www.cfrail.org (or .com). It's common knowledge that Phase I goes from DeBary to ORMC. Phase II goes from ORMC to Poinciana. Sea World is not on the route; the CSX tracks follow Orange Ave and 17/92.

6 train cars have already been purchased; 4 delivered, and are being tested in the Tri-Rail system as we speak. The only question lately has been whether WP and/or Maitland get a station.

what a great shot. just look at how far back they are going to widen that stretch of 408 to accomodate those exit lanes to I-4.

Those dead end beams will stay a dead end for a few years until they extend them up and over 408 to accomodate 408 westbound traffic to i4 westbound, for now that crazy merge of traffic switching lanes will become the 408 westbound to i4 westbound traffic until phase 2 of the interchange begins.
