Not major news, but I received notice of an upcoming HPB hearing in the mail: The History Center (former Courthouse Building) will be sprucing up the landscaping and landscaping (https://orlando.novusagenda.com/AgendaPublic/AttachmentViewer.ashx?AttachmentID=99003&ItemID=53808).

"According to the applicant, the goals of this improvement for the terrace are to create an exterior gathering space for events, improve the landscape and hardscape surrounding the History Center, and provide region specific landscaping in order to help educate the public. The landscape will showcase Florida-friendly and native plants that can survive the urban environment of downtown Orlando. The design scheme calls for live oak, Little Gem magnolias, and relocated sabal palms. The lower tier plantings will combine hardy native shrubs and groundcovers such as Formosa azalea and Blue flag irises with spaces of hardy flowering shrubs in the proposed planters consistent with the existing landscape character of the downtown streetscape."

I also heard there were plans to spruce up Lake Eola park, but along came the epidemic... Regardless, what better time to invest in public park space?

I don't know, but it seems like with all the quarantining and restricted access to restaurants, bars and other businesses, there might be an associated drop in tax revenue, which might mean now is not the time to be spending money on non-essential projects.

It seems Marcus Jordan wants the City to invest $100K in his proposed overpriced downtown shoe store that had a brief run at Disney Springs:

From OBJ

*wonders if we ever gave Sam Behr $100K for his shoe store?” Then again, maybe Sam’s shoes weren’t pretty, or was that just the tires?

Since when does the city pay for buildouts?

Since yesterday. In the council meeting, they restarted a recession-era program designed to help incentivize retail. I thought @spenser1058 would be excited.

The proposed Revised CRA Retail Stimulus Program is consistent with the redevelopment goals and principles set forth in the Downtown Orlando Community Redevelopment Area Plan, as amended (“DTOutlook” or the “Plan”) related to retail revitalization. The purpose of the Revised Program is to attract quality retail operators and to achieve high-quality interior buildout of retail establishments within the core of downtown Orlando. Applicants would be eligible to receive up to $75,000 or 50% of the total cost of T.I related costs, whichever is less. Eligible Improvements include electrical repair/upgrade, HVAC/mechanical repair or upgrades, plumbing, dry wall, feature walls, flooring, windows/doors, lighting, life safety improvements (i.e. sprinklers), permit fees, sewer fees, and impact fees. Applicants would also be able to receive a one-time award of up to $25,000 to cover rent expenses. Rent abatement payments to be made quarterly i.e. a business would receive up to $6,250 a quarter for a total of $25,000. The maximum funding amount per eligible business would remain $100,000.

I’d feel a lot better about this if the first person jumping on the bandwagon wasn’t a friend of Pat Williams billionaire’s son. If it’s a coincidence, the optics are horrible.

It’s hard not to think, same old, same old.

Miss one project by 1 block and the other won't qualify because we're not new even though we may be gutting the store down to studs again. Oh well such is Orlando.

Call up the long lost billionaire and friend of Pat Williams in the family and they’ll create a program just for you!
