SouthPark Mall

Considering that SouthPark was extremely packed yesterday, I don't doubt that it was the most congested on Black Friday. I'm actually extremely surprised it's not Lenox, though. You can get through SouthPark pretty easily without bumping into anyone and you can usually find a parking space within 5 minutes there. At Lenox, it can take about 15 or even two minutes just to be on Peachtree next to Phipps and just get to Lenox, then an additional 20 minutes to find a space. No, I'm not talking about anywhere near Christmas time. either.

Black Friday at South Park was a JOKE! My wife and I walked there because of the hype... It was no busier than a normal day when I was a kid... I never understood why it would be so bad, since most stores there don't offer all that much, being a more luxury retail oriented mall. Then again we were there around 11am... so we might have missed the rush...

That's definitely it because by 4:30 the Asheville Mall wasn't really much more packed than a normal Saturday, and it was extremely packed from 1 when I got there to 3:30 AM.

^I think Tom Tom's #1 rating means South Park is the hardest mall to find on Black Friday. It is a GPS device. And South Charlotte is home to confusing street names, like Queen Sharon Park Church Creek Road West.

Hey I live on the corner of Queen Sharon Park Church Creek Road West, and West Sharon Queen Amity Plaza Avenue East

No it specifically says that it's the most congested, not hardest to find. However, I do agree that it is hard to find. S. Charlotte roads are really confusing because roads end and begin for no apparent reason (i.e. Tyvola and Fairview, Woodlawn and Runnymeade, etc.) You pretty much have to have a GPS the first time you go or else there's really no way you could find it.

As far as the hotel goes, I think this would be a prime spot for a high-end boutique hotel. We've already seen some pop up in a few other cities in NC - Proximity Hotel In Greensboro, O.Henry Hotel in Greensboro, The Umstead in Cary, and to a slightly lesser but still relevant extent, Hotel Siena in Chapel Hill. These are all suburban-style, 3-4 story hotels that offer exceptional service and accomodations. The Umstead and Proximity are constantly on Conde Nast Traveler's "top hotels" lists. Not to say that it would be bad if it were a Hyatt Place or something of the like (also very nice), but it would be great to have another AAA 5 Diamond hotel in Charlotte (in addition to the Ritz Carlton, which was listed as the 5th best hotel in the country a few months ago in the reader poll).

Ashley Park backs up to Phillips Place. But you wouldn't know it, since the developments lack connectivity.

It's nice that South Park continues to evolve into a more urban center. But at some point, all of these developments need to have more connectivity in order to truly function as an urban center. Until that happens, you really just have more insular pods that are at least walk-friendly themselves within the development, but you then have to get back into your car just to travel next door to yet an another "urban" insular pod.

Just providing a connection can go a long way, still allowing each development to read largely separate for developer's sake. For example, Circle at South End and Piedmont Row are also right next to each other in South Park, yet there, the residents of one development will actually be able to walk easily to the shops of the other.

Its very unfortunate too, because if you look at it on google maps, Broad Street is no more than 50 feet from connecting to the Phillips Place parking lot. Unfortunately no further Rezoning is needed for this project, or someone could have brought it up...

^Yep, that cross access between parking lots is nice for cars wanting to get to/from the signal on Fairview Road in front of Phillips Place when headed to/from the new Whole Foods.

But alas, that's a great example of why connectivity is often shunned. In this example, Philips Place will have all of the impacts of the connectivity (more cars) without its benefits (not more pedestrians). That's why it would be better to link "main streets" than parking lots.

All they want to do is compete, why don't they ever want to feed of eachother!?

Sorry for the gratuitous teaser but...

My sources are saying there is something major happening at SouthPark. I cannot disclose who the major something is or who my sources are but BE EXCITED. Lets just say South Park might not be as tight as we thought it was. Fingers Crossed kids.
