That will be an apartment community on the school site with Woodfield buying it.

I'm guessing there won't be retail since this is a few blocks away from South Blvd.  The good news is this will make something like ~11 multifamily projects in Loso, which will create some great residential density for more urbanization of this local area and making it a complete neighborhood.

To be honest, with everything going on near Old Meck, I don't think it needs it. I just hope there is very little surface parking. Maybe the Tryon facing buildings will have a little retail, like Coffee or something.

I believe that was the Cash America Pawn shop in another life. (not) famous as the site of a gambling location fronted by a CMPD officer. Operators called themselves the "Greek Mafia". *

This report was in media of the time (2001) but the first link I found today was Casino City TImes-Your Guide to Gaming Excitement.

Thanks for that! I have never heard about the gambling here but the story dovetails perfectly with stories I have heard about the bootleg/speakeasy place behind the old Greystone run by the same "Greek Mafia."

A bootleg/speakeasy place run by the "mafia" physically behind the Greystone bar?  Or do you mean Belle Acres between that shopping center and the Chic-fil-a?

I have so many questions about Greystone Pub.  We'll go in from time to time and don't mind it for what it is but when we do we're usually the only group or a handful of others..  So that's why your comment piqued my interest lol

This was described to me about 10-15 years ago by a relatively young (in her mid 20s) local Greek who was talking about where her dad hung out in the neighborhood (Sedgefield) back in the day. The place was described as a back entrance to the old Greystone restaurant and as a room 'in the back". This history was offered as an explanation of why the new Greystone was built with the disproportionately large bar (I think the owner who built the new place was a son of one of these backroom drinkers).  I always thought that part of the reason why the bar has struggled is because the old Greek regulars either  aged out of alcohol or moved away thanks to windfall profits from their Sedgefield houses. An old neighbor of mine (Vic, the beekeeper, good dude) on Greystone rd mentioned a bar 'up the street' that he hung out in the 80s, but he was never more specific than that.  I asked about this backroom bar when I was at the new Greystone one night not long after they opened, the bartender acted like he knew exactly what I was talking about, but offered no confirming details.

I might have been in the original Greystone twice (was one the same site), I can't remember the layout well enough to know if any of this was possible. Seemed like the story made more sense for the backside of the old Cupboard (currently the ChickflA) but all my clues pointed to the rear of the Greystone.

Thanks for sharing!

Silly question...  which restaurant had the Coconut creme pie that was to die for... Cupboard or Greystone ?  ...and the hot rolls that simply melted in your mouth...

Not a silly question at all, IIRC the Cupboard was the pie place.

Too funny, I was just mentioning the "Greek Mafia" the other day to my wife (also a Charlotte native) and she had no idea what I was talking about.  As a car nerd, two of the younger guys were super obvious as one drove a bright yellow BMW M3 and the other drive a purple M3.  I forgot which one had the trailer hitch that would sometimes tow a trailer around with 2 sport bikes (Yamahas I think)

Leans back, extends arms, links fingers and cracks knuckles. OK, here goes.

There was a Krispy Kreme shop/bakery on the location of the current Burger King at Marsh and South. Note well that Sedgefield was well known at this time as the place where Greek families bought homes. Many of them were in this area. My household historian herself had a Greek family in the home next to hers from her youth. To enter that Krispy Kreme was to enter a Kafeinion (sp) with dark haired Greek men nursing coffee and smoking cigarettes down to the filter with no white meat remaining. A blue haze hovered overhead nearly all the time, especially in the pre-lunch hours and a take out order was the only choice since the smoke was overwhelming. There was also a small brick house behind the KK at the corner of Melbourne and Marsh. The house is still there and still owned by two Greek men, in their names, for 50+ years. This house was a well known Greek Mens' "Social Club".  Gambling, drinking ouzo and Greek coffee, and smoking. Very much smoking. No one bothered the "club" as they handled their business within the "family". One day a pair of young men not of the "Greek" persuasion heard that gambling was on the premises and decided to take out the place. They burst in, guns drawn and demanded the goods. Unfortunately the blue haze was so dense they could not make out the nature of their targets. All the Greek men leaped to their feet and rushed the men. They shouted and subdued them and made threats all in Greek and before the poor miscreants were pummeled to powder they were thrown out of the club on their ears. Someone called the police, likely to save the life of the burglars, and the police politely carried them away and the Greek men went back to their coffee, cigarettes, ouzo and gambling. Those of us who were aware of the situation thought this hilarious.

edit: 225 Marsh Road is the house address. I have the general outline of the event here if not the particulars from my memory. I provide your personal wayback machine.

Last time I checked, the house at 225 Marsh still had an active liquor license, although I rarely have seen cars there since COVID.

Hahaha.   My across the street neighbors (who are Greek) and I were sharing old “Greek Mafia” stories just the other day.  We’re Charlotte natives who graduated from MPHS over 20 years ago.  Lots of “Greek Mafia” rumors back then and perhaps a few misadventures in the Sedgefield and abutting South Blvd areas.  Cheers to the native Charlottean unicorns!  These “Greek Mafia” stories bring back a lot of memories.

Just talked to my Greek friend and he remembers the stories of the Greek Mafia here.  One such robbery at an underground gambling joint left the patrons without their pants so they would not chase after them.  and this was center in  Greystone LoSo area.  He says these places are not operating now.

But on another note what is the situation with these "arcades" that are basically gambling spots all over town?

Axios published this story about the arcades last Fall.  One of them had moved from South Blvd over to South Tryon a few weeks before the story.  I figure the owners are just hopping around to whatever buildings are cheap, with plans to hop again when rents rise.

Do  you remember the little old Greek lady busted for pandering underaged girls?  I believe that house was in Dilworth.

I went to school with a lot of Greek kids from that period. Most were absolutely great citizens,  but they all had relatives coming and going and some were ner-do wells.  I remember that, at one point, Charlotte had the second largest Greek speaking community outside of Greece. Only Chicago had more.  I don't have to tell you how many 'illegal' Greeks made it over.  And, yes, The KK was always an interesting place.

My best friend is now a retired dentist. He is Greek and consequently worked on a lot of Greek teeth. Most wanted to pay cash,  and they treated him like royalty. Dining out with him was wonderful.  My buddies and I nicknamed him "The Dentist"...wink,wink.  He has some amazing stories. When we would walk into the old Greek Isles, Panos would treat us to free wine, the best table and of course free samplers. I think a lot of what we call "The Mafia" is just friends looking out for each other.

What I remember is a house at Kingston and Lyndhurst with working girls I have mentioned before. Not with a Greek woman as I recall however I kept my distance from the operation. At Kingston and Euclid , a block from my house, there was a family(?) that had a 12 year old daughter who was being rented by the parents*. Gruesome stuff and an example of the neighborhood and the city in early-mid 1970's.

It was more like (insert slander of small semi-rural Southern town) than the city it became.

Wow didn’t realize the extent of this! Curious who they will get to anchor the beer garden

did not realize that was a beer garden.  I would hope that is open to the public and not just residents of their apartments.  with all the apartments planned nearby they would have a captive walking customer base.
