Found this link through a commenter on raleighskyline. The contract binding Wachovia to the property is ending in January, opening up a number of opportunities at a fairly prime location near Martin Street. Also Exchange Plaza and Market Plaza, along with Wilmington St. put the building on its own 'block' which could be a plus for letting light penetrate the building. Even though the market is more than likely not ready for another tower, it is nice to still haven't something to think about and plan for (ahead of the market).

This is unlikely but another article on underground retail in crowded world cities made me ponder that idea. Leaving the ground level open, an atrium could stretch below ground a few levels while still letting enough light in to make it inviting. While space isn't exactly limited in Downtown, this is a way to increase commercial density along the spine. This would require a deal to develop land under adjacent buildings. Imagine a grocery (that delivers and allows for curbside service) or entertainment such as a movie theater or bowling alley complete with a restaurant and bar.
