Wondering if this would open the door for city to pursue additional annexations in that area... annexation laws in SC are weird.

The strip that creates contiguity was annexed last month.  CSX is the property owner, and they signed. These type of shoestring annexations are still allowed under certain circumstances. ROW alone is no longer sufficient though, at least not for a significant distance.

When City View unincorporated, I wish the city would have tried to merge the two cities rather than just let them  surrender their charter.

Funny the city annexes these little pieces of properties that mean little. All the old mill villages, City View etc should be in the city already. Just think what the city population would be if it just included inside Pleasantbug Dr., inside Blue Ridge Dr, out to White Horse Rd and back to Pleasanburg. 300K? It's so ridiculous that you can easily walk from main st. to the city limits in several directions.

Gotcha, if CSX signed then its definitely good.

The mills were almost always built outside the city purposely to avoid city taxes.  Once the homes were sold off, they had already been out of the city for decades.  The resients saw no need to annex and the cost of services would have exceeded the new revenue to the city anyway.   Now that the property values are rising, that may not be the case as much.

I have always seen annexing residential as an investment.

Sure, you might lose money on the residential. But the commercial properties that come with it in the area (in this case the mills) can lift it over the edge.

You can't produce contiguity to most commercial without going through a neighborhood quite often.

There are also financial negatives to not taking the mill village along with the mill. Without helping rehab the village, it might hurt the business of the mill.

Hmmm, that could be a quite an expensive endeavor. You're mostly looking at providing services, and improving infrastructure for very little tax gain. I think the arts district is a somewhat fair case study for how other mill villages would be invested in and improved by the City.  And while the arts district has been extremely successful, it was not largely reliant on the City for improvement. The City has only slowly trickled money into the area.

Curious if any annexations reported since March....heard a rumor there's a major one possibly on Woodruff Rd. involving  substantial acreage.
