The Housing Authority of Winston-Salem is presenting an ambitious plan to redevelop property East of downtown into a mixed-use, mixed income neighborhood. Land and housing projects North and East of the new Career Center is proposed as a mix of retail, residential, structured parking (hidden), live/work units and a relocated East Winston Library and/or some other new civic building. This new neighborhood would be attractive with bike lanes, public art, and possibly streetcars. This year, HAWS hopes to kick off the new Cleveland Ave. with a 50-unit project on 10th St. This new proposal, a Liberty St. "Brick by Brick" initiative, MLK "Golden Mile" initiative lead by WSSU, and the city's attempt to restore Union Station with public and private investment, all hope to reconnect eastern Winston-Salem with downtown.
