Dover, Kohl & Partners has conducted a new charrette starting on Monday Feb 28th to get feedback on what to with the "80 acres comprising the former Riverside housing site" which "is about the same size as the French Quarter in New Orleans." A new street leading into the Alabama River which will allow people to put their boats in the river will be named View Street. The vegetation overgrowth has been cut down to give a clear view of the river. Some ideas from last night's meeting ranged from a new residential area similar to Cottage Hill, a large park, an aquarium, a large grocery store, etc. On Friday the master plan will be revealed at One Dexter Plaza (old One Court Square).

"No ABC stores. No title loans. No quick cash stores. We're looking to go up, not down," said Larry Wilson, who is an assistant pastor at Open Door Christian Faith near Maxwell Boulevard.

Update:

Here is a video from the preliminary unveiling of the master plan for a new neighborhood by Dover, Kohl & Partners: http://www.montgomer...01/814611638001

It is under revision to accommodate a hotel that wants to locate there and a 9-mile bike trail from Maxwell AFB to Gunter Hill Park. We should it beginning to fill in in 5 years and completed in 10 years. 3 percent of the area will be upscale for home of $300k and up, most homes will be smaller homes. Multi-family dwellings available for rent and townhomes and row houses will be included. The proposed development is dubbed "Promontory Point Square". Once the plans are finalized then it will be voted on by the city council.

"Dover predicted that, once the downtown urban farm is in operation and once improvements are made to Overlook Park, which literally overlooks the farm now, this block would become highly desirable real estate. The Riverwalk could be rerouted through Overlook Park as it continues on to Maxwell Air Force Base."

"While planners see these improvements as the more short-term and immediately possible, the long-term vision includes mostly smaller scale, more affordable residences, a bike-pedestrian path, a 35-mph speed limit on Maxwell Boulevard, more public green spaces and a developed area on the river that would be set up like a 'great urban terrace.'"
