Florida Metros: Daytona Beach MSA

I came across this link in Heckles "median income" thread. It has data profiles for 2002 and I'm finding it pretty interesting. http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/Pro...2/ACS/index.htm

So what I thought we could do is take it metro by metro, disect the numbers, share experiences and help us all get a good handle on Florida's places. If you all don't want to play along that's fine, but I'll get it started.

I believe the MSA is just Volusia count and includes Daytona Beach, New Smyrna, Orange Park and Deltona. Not sure about that though.

I have parents that live in the county, so i'm slightly familiar with it. From what I've heard from people around there is that a lack of jobs keeps people away. It's a beautiful place, but there's just nowhere to work. Consequently, there's a brain drain of young talented people. Retirees make up a large bulk of the population. A trend I've noticed lately is the semi-retired are making the area a bedroom community of Orlando, with many of them moving to the Beach and commuting to Orlando a couple of times a week, or everyday with the thought that retirement is just around the corner.

It's not a very diverse area, and a place I consider one of the more "redneck" areas of Florida. Bike Week or Nascar don't do much to dispel those ideas. 88% white 10% black and 7% hispanic.

11% of the housing units are mobile homes.

51% are renters.

I'll look more later.

I've never been fond of Daytona, and I could never actually bring myself to swim there, the sand is so hard and well, dirty. All and all, its really just serves a special (if large) clientelle (Nascar fans, bikers, BCR, etc) and since I've lived in Florida since I was 5, I know the better beaches to go to..on a positive note, the city has been cleaning up its image and has done a lot of street landscaping so hopefully that will help.
