cityboi 2156 Report post Posted August 10, 2011 Big time tennis comes to Winston-Salem at the Wake Forest tennis center. Tennis stars such as Andy Roddick and Greensboro native John Isner will be playing there. The new Winston-Salem Open is part of Olympus U.S. Open Series. The Winston-Salem Open is one of 10 summer tournaments linking to the U.S. Open. The matches start around the time of the Wyndham Championship. cityboi 2156 Report post Posted August 10, 2011 This could be a great opportunity for WInston-Salem that could lead to bigger tennis events and maybe even a larger tennis stadium (hopefully downtown).
twincity 5 Report post Posted August 10, 2011 Don Flow has been working on this for years. I'm happy his dream is becoming a reality. The seating being put up at the main arena is temporary. Winston-Salem Open plans on constructing a permanent arena once this years tournament is over. Its supposed to have two levels! All concessions and restrooms will be shared with Groves. Hopefully this will become another gem for the city. Too bad its not in a more visible location. site plan: Fox8 video: http://www.myfox8.co...0,3258464.story WFMY video: http://www.digtriad....-Right-On-Track
cityboi 2156 Report post Posted August 10, 2011 This is a big deal. The event will receive national coverage on ESPN2 and the final singles matches on CBS.
cityboi 2156 Report post Posted August 27, 2011 Tennis star John Isner from Greensboro wins the Winston-Salem Open. LOL there was one awkward moment at the end. When the CBS announcer interviewed John Isner at the end, he made a mistake and said "you won here in Greensboro". The crowd booed then John Isner said "its the Triad, its all the same" and the crowd continued to boo. But I've heard "Piedmont Triad" mentioned during this event more than any other national event held in this area. The Irony is that John Isner is from Greensboro and he won the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University. Webb Simpson graduated from Wake Forest University and won the PGA Wyndham Championship in Greensboro.
