the epicenter of a 5.9 earthquake was located just north of Richmond Virginia and was felt in the Carolinas and as far north as Toronto canada. There was a violent shaking in Washington DC where there were reports of the Washington Monument tilting. The Pentagon and U.S. Capitol building was evacuated. A large earthquake on the east coast is much more dangerous than on the east coast because many buildings and bridges on the east coast were designed to withstand major earthquakes like structures in California.
