I really hate this for the city of Memphis. I got married there, have worked there off and on for the last decade and still have tons of family there. They have some really deep rooted problems that I don’t think many cities in this country could ever understand. Really hope they can pull through this and continue their resurgence.

What deep rooted problems? It’s amazing, I’ve lived most of my life within a 3 hour drive of Memphis but I know very little about their history, beyond the obvious facts.

Metro Council has announced a halt to the controversial TIF (Tax Increment Financing) plan for developers until June 30, 2019.

So Metro constantly pleads poverty for MNPS but spend 2 million annually on trees? What does that translate into, 20-40 teachers?

I believe a big part of this is dealing with stormwater runoff. This is becoming a big issue with the increase in housing density.

The story is not very informative. The storm water rationale would have been worth exploring.

There were also three facts presented worthy of more detailed reporting.

1- Metro has a forestry manager

2- Why?

"If you look around, the places that have lost tree cover in the last 10 years or so, they are predominantly areas of high poverty and they are where we have high concentrations of African-Americans in our town," he said. "That's why we have decided to focus initially on those areas of town as we go out and plant trees for this community."

3- Is this just a jobs program by another name?

The new tree campaign will help employ youth involved in Metro's Opportunity Now program, according to the mayor's office.

And more trees will continue to be cut down as a lot of us are dealing with varying decades old properties whose ownership did not take care of the property at all.  I cut down some trees on my property last year and will be cutting down more soon.  There isn't much room to plant new ones.
