It looks like we may be getting something similar the Daily Memphian as Steven Cavendish is planning to relaunch The Nashville Banner.

How many think the perceived arbitrary height restrictions throughout the downtown core are ridiculous?  Some of it just doesn't make sense to me.  So...you have Endeavor at the 27 story height restriction...and then the one22one building across the street is probably going to go up to 27 stories...but since it's an office tower, it will be maybe 100' taller than Endeavor.

What does that "story" restriction really do for anyone?  It just seems like some king sitting on a throne throwing out numbers to show everyone he's in charge.

From what I've gleaned about them, I think they're absurd. As you note, a floor-count restriction leaves a wide berth of actual height. Like everything I've heard about the KVB height (30 stories), I say let the market dictate how tall developers want to go. That land at the corner of Hermitage and KVB needs virtually no height restriction. 

Yes, I get that they can allow variances based on certain desired aspects of a proposal. But the 30-stories is arbitrary and it creates a mindset among people that anything higher is a net negative.

The Tennessean is reporting that the television show “Nashville” is being developed as a Broadway musical.  No word on when it will premiere, but it has some of the biggest and best Broadway producers behind it.

I feel like he is a bit more moderate and wouldn't go for something like this.  His roots are in business so I would hope he sees the business aspect in this.

He himself has stated his roots are in his faith. Just how much that conflicts with his business-centric approach otherwise remains to be seen. This is that litmus test.

Lee belongs to a very conservative church that is very far right in beliefs, so don't be surprised if he backs this or at least doesn't confront the rural nuts who seem to dominate our legislature.  They seem to especially love to stick it to Nashville.

Yeah...some of those bills are just ridiculous.  Live and let live.  I'm hopeful we'll one day get to a place where we all decide that if something doesn't hurt you, effect you or impede upon your life in any way...then leave it alone.  Too much "do it my way" going on in this nation.  Little more peace and love from both sides of the political spectrum would do us all some good.

Can we get back on topic?  Most of the "backward bumpkins" are not backwards.  If they are "rural" nuts, it's only because most of the "urban" nuts get to define what is "nuts."  And it is impossible to separate someone's deeply held beliefs, be they religious or secular, from decisions related to legislation.

None of us want Amazon, Oracle or AB to leave, but we must respect the workings of our representative government.  There are many people in this state and across the country who are not happy with the progressives and they have a right to express their beliefs publicly and in the voting booth.

So, let's be civil, show some respect for our neighbors who don't think like us, and get back on topic, please.

Admittedly, the "bumpkin" moniker was added by me purely out of frustration, and I'm happy to apologize for that if such a mundane, toothless term truly does offend you or someone else.  On the other hand though, I feel we should be clear here.  If one harbors a desire to move backward to a time already past just because they want the ability to persecute a certain group of people?   Well friend, that is pretty much the textbook definition of "backward."  I mean, sorry, I know we're supposed to be polite about everything here, but let's not sugar coat it.  That's just what it is.  And although I am more than happy to agree to disagree with folks on a whole host of issues big and small,  I refuse to "respect" this.  I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else personally, but I do refuse to "respect" outright persecution just because certain others "believe" they should be able to persecute.  I have seen first hand the severe damage these "beliefs" have had on some of my friends and my family members who were just trying to live good, honest lives, and it is a tragedy, and  an outrage, and a shame.

I agree, and I think this gets to the underlying point.  Shouldn't that civility extend to our neighbors who happen to be members of the LGBTQ community (many of whom are Christian)?  Shouldn't they rightfully expect to be able to enter a shop that's open for business to the public and expect to be served just as any other member of the public would?

This is another important point.  You're right that these discussions often come down to who is deciding what is 'nuts' and what is not.  For most of my life, I mistakenly believed that this particular debate had been settled over soda fountains in the 60's when we collectively decided that it was nuts for retail businesses to deny service to specific classes of people.   If somebody's religious beliefs make it impossible for them to serve the general public without irreconcilably violating their faith, I highly respect their right to deny service to whomever for whatever reason they deem fit, and for the state to license any tax-free religious organization they may choose to found, fund, or associate with in order to enable their further observance.  But I can't think of a good reason why the government should grant business licenses to companies that would deny service to gay people, or trans people, or black people, or women, or Christians, or Irish, or Jews, or Bumpkins, or Southpaws or Any other group of people that has been arbitrarily discriminated against over the years.

I understand your frustration, and to a degree, I share it. The name-calling irks me as well, and I have also seen plenty of nasty comments on this board directed toward anyone in Tennessee who doesn't live in Davidson County. However, I also understand how @BnaBreaker is fed up with the rural vs. urban and old vs. new issues that have divided Nashville's politics in recent years. He rather unfairly generalized those constituents as bumpkins, but he is not wrong about the stubbornness or backwardness of that particular demographic. A lot of those people are resistant to any sort of change, and it gets tiring having to deal with their knee-jerk reaction to anything new in Nashville. While every opinion should be treated fairly, their staunch opposition to Nashville's growth almost always lacks a coherent argument; instead, they jabber about something new they don't like with little or no evidence to show that it would be bad for the city. As a non-Nashville resident, I do my best to understand that they are afraid of getting priced out (which is perfectly rational), but at some point you just have to shake your heads at these people. Being from a rural town myself, their opposition to a lot of awesome things for Nashville are rooted in either ignorance or envy of those doing better than they are. I know I will get some crap from the previous sentence, so I'd like to make it clear I am not ragging on lower-income residents, but I maintain this mentality is very prevalent in rural towns or less well-off areas.

Concerning name-calling, I think BnaBreaker's comment was innocuous. I have seen much, much worse on the Transit thread as well as some others, and it's almost always from one specific poster. That poster intentionally utilizes crass insults and foul language to try to piss people off (pretty much the definition of trolling), and his content hardly ever gets moderated. Case in point, I wouldn't waste your breath about some aggressive comments you'll see on here- just ignore them and move on. Like any website, we have our trolls. Get rid of one and another spawns somewhere, like mold spores in a shower.

That's fair, and I respect that, but then again, it does tie in somewhat to the Amazon/AB incentive discussion.  Nonetheless, I do think you're right, and I hope you can forgive my somewhat abrasive tone on the subject of anti-LGBT legislation.  At the risk of oversharing I must say that it's an especially rough spot for me, as I have had two loved ones take their own lives in the past due in large part to fact that when they came out, the religious communities they looked to for a sense of belonging and support and comfort instead gave them nothing but hate and vitriol and judgement, simply for being who they are.  So I will be honest and say that I do find it quite hard to 'respect' that mentality, particularly when the basis for these 'beliefs' which lead to this type of legislation usually revolve around a couple cherry picked passages from a book filled to the brim with other commands that routinely and quite conveniently get ignored by those same people.  I'm sure we could all quite easily make a list.   I wish they'd just come right out and say 'I want to feel good and believe I'm following the word of the good book without actually having to change anything, so I focus in on the stuff that doesn't apply directly to me.'  

I suppose I simply just don't think that a "belief," religious or otherwise, automatically deserves respect simply because it is a belief.  In my analytical mind, a belief should have solid basis behind, especially if it is going to be put forth as legislation.  I'm quite sure these folks pushing for these bills would agree with that if the tables were turned.  If I were trying to get a law passed that said religious people could not marry, would they respect that simply because I 'believed' it?  Of course not, and they'd be right not to.  They should be free to believe whatever they wish for whatever reason they choose to believe it.  It's when they attempt to transform those beliefs into laws which would have real world negative impacts on real people that I begin to have a problem.   

And please don't misunderstand me.  I have nothing whatsoever against the religious or conservatives or folks who live in rural areas in general.  I know from experience that most of them are very good people, and much of my own family checks one or more of those boxes.  I suppose I just wish people could learn to see their religion as a personal thing and take up the philosophy of live and let live.  

In any case, with that said, I won't say anymore on the subject, as you're right, I've already said too much.  But I said my piece and I thank you for indulging me.  Hopefully in a few days time this will all have passed and we won't have to worry about whether or not Amazon/AB will be impacted.  Fingers crossed!
