Phoenix Capital  is pitching an idea for a hotel somewhere in central Nashville that would  feature 100 guest rooms, plus 124 condos on upper levels.

Women-focused hotel management organization She Has a Deal has organized its first annual competition at the Hilton McLean in Virginia on Oct. 24, and one team taking part in the event is focused on bringing its hotel concept to Nashville.

Chelsea Lawson and Heaven Douglas are the members of Phoenix Capital, and according to the organization's website, their project, Project Rise, is a "mixed-used development in the heart of Nashville with a new lifestyle hotel honoring Nashville's music, history and legends."

Lawson and Douglas chose Nashville because of the city's growth and potential as a luxury market. In addition, the pair believes diversity, equality and inclusion are important in the hospitality industry and want to expand Nashville's universe of hotel developers.

The team, alongside four others, will pitch the projects to industry investors and experts — the winning team gets $50,000 in equity toward its project.

We've met six families who have moved from that part of the country to our area of Hamilton County.  We have the fastest Internet in the country. Don't know what they all do for a living, but three are self-employed. And I know one of them sold their house in NJ for close to a million.  I think a couple of the families are having trouble selling their houses in NY.

At my church in Cookeville we've had probably a dozen families move in from high tax states over the summer.  Some work locally, q couple  commute to Nashville, but most work from home.  Our internet (gigabit) isn't as fast as Chattanooga's, but it's available even out in the boonies.  I live 25 miles outside of town in the middle of nowhere, 8 miles from the nearest gas station, but I have gigabit internet at my little farm.  We're also seeing people move here from Nashville, particularly Williamson County.  The guy in charge of the state business incubator said on Thursday that Cookeville is one of the top destinations for wealthy families who can work from home as they cash out and buy estates here.  Lately I've been seeing a lot of cars around Cookeville from New York and Illinois.  One family at my church--an orthopedic surgeon--bought a 7,000 square foot house on 5 acres with a pool and small barn for $600k, annual property tax of $5k, something they could only dream of back in Cali for their 5 teenaged boys.  Plus, that Tennessee Promise college scholarship deal is also another huge perk.

It can be a huge deal, but not for wealthy families.  Tennessee Promise is a last dollar scholarship which means it pays nothing toward any tuition related or mandatory expense if a person's estimated family contribution (according to federal financial aid calculation) meets a certain level.

More analysis of Urban Land Institute's ranking of cities most poised for growth in 2021, which placed Nashville #3. 

So-called 18-hour cities like Nashville are finding new advantages over more established, denser metros like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles amid the pandemic's health, financial and social devastation.

"One of the biggest trends that lost momentum due to COVID-19 is the rising appeal of big cities," the report states. "Charlotte, Denver, Dallas, Nashville, Portland, and Seattle are six favorite boomtowns, attracting far more than their share of smart young workers. These markets are already starting to recover from massive job losses due to COVID."

Increasing migration to Sun Belt states is one of many trends that emerged as the virus spread, and the mass relocation appears likely to continue for the next several years.

Glockstore.com is relocating to Nashville from San Diego in 65,000 sq. ft. at 1930 Airline Drive and promises 110 new jobs over the next 5 years.

The Academy of Country Music is scouting for 15,000 sq. ft. of space in Nashville to become its primary or secondary home (currently HQ'd in LA since starting in 1964).  It is unknown how many jobs might be involved.  The Academy is the organization behind the ACM Awards Show which is broadcast on network TV for the [past 55 years. Nashville finally hosted the first broadcast from Music City in September.

California has always had a huge country music scene, especially after the dust bowl days where millions fled the farmlands of middle America during the Great Depression and headed to California.  The ACM has always been the counterpoint to Nashville's CMA.  The CMA awards are always in the fall (early November) in Nashville...while the ACM's used to be in LA...and then moved to Vegas...and are usually in April.

This will make some people happy.  Whataburger's first Tennessee location will be on Old Hickory Blvd in Hermitage near I-40.  No word on its opening date, but at least now we know where it will be.  I'm sure more locations will follow.

The NBJ article states that Whataburger was in Nashville in the 1950s-1970s. Do any of the long-time Nashville forumers here know where the old Wataburgers were? 

Somewhat rambling explanation: May seem silly to some, but I have an interest in (and actually go searching for) old roadside gas stations, restaurant chains, and other iconic establishments/franchises. The few standing nowadays are often abandoned or repurposed. With a child who is finishing a degree in Architecture next year, I have a great companion to do that, just not often. So I will sometimes seek them out on Google street view. A lot has disappeared in the past 20-30 years in this region. So I'd like to get some of them in photos before they're gone. There's an old "Big Boy" restaurant from the 1950s here in Chatty that's still standing but no longer a restaurant. It stands next to an old KFC franchise building that is also not a restaurant anymore. Lots of roadside architecture from the past still here for the time being.

There was a Whataburger at 1837 Gallatin Pike North across from Rivergate Mall.   It is Flower Express now and painted bright pink.

There used to be on on Nolensville Road in the early 80's about 1/4 mile SE of where the Zoo entrance is now.

When it was a restaurant?  Hard to tell, but it looks like the classic style with the canopy out front. Did it have the canopy... carhop service?

Nope it has always been Flower Express as far back as I can remember... I was born in 82' so I think the Whataburger is a little before my time.

There was one on Charlotte Pike near American Road. My apartment was a mile away, so it made fixing dinner easy. I remember the fries as being perfect.

I did stop at one in Amarillo, TX a few years ago and it was nice. I will make a few visits when it comes to town.
