At the  4:13 mark, one of the model builders start talking about a building that looks super familiar and it's in Nasvhille. But I am blanking on which actual building it is???

Mayor John Cooper announced Monday that Metro’s new housing division will be headed by the Greater Nashville Regional Council’s economic and community development director.

Angela Hubbard will officially take the helm for the new division on Jan. 3, and her team will lead Metro’s efforts on developing an overall housing strategy, including that of affordable housing. That team, comprised in part of the Barnes Fund staff and a data analyst, will engage in a fact-finding operation on which to base funding recommendations, track Nashville’s affordable housing inventory with a central database and make sure that Metro makes the most impactful allocation decisions with its funds.

Open-air party vehicles will soon be able to welcome beer back on board — with a permit — thanks to new legislation passed Tuesday.

Metro Council unanimously passed an ordinance giving the Metro Beer Permit Board the ability to issue mobile beer sale and mobile bring-your-own-beer permits to entertainment vehicles.

Because pedal taverns and pedal carriages are already permitted and regulated by the commission, these businesses will be able to apply for mobile beer permits as soon as the Metro Beer Board begins accepting applications.

Unenclosed party buses will have longer to wait. To apply for the mobile beer permit, these vehicles need to have previously been approved by the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission. The commission is shaping its entertainment vehicle approval process, which won't begin until April, leaving unenclosed vehicles unable to legally allow alcohol on board in the meantime.

Nashville is a finalist to recruit an Australian company that wants to open a U.S. office hub with 120 jobs.

That company, Lumary, has narrowed its search to Nashville, Denver and Tampa, Florida, said Brook Joyce, a vice president and head of U.S. commercialization.

Average annual wages would top $80,000, according to information the company provided to Colorado economic development officials.

The business, whose roots date to 2015, creates software for clinicians who work with senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Thanks for bringing this up! While I am aware that your mileage may vary in terms of which types of recycling actually benefit the environment, this is just depressing news for a major city. Once monthly collection was already pretty meager to begin with, and glass was already excluded as well. The trash company's bankruptcy in retrospect explains why there were so many missed pickups this fall ... I hope the city can figure out a workaround that's sustainable longer term (I read in one of the articles that COVID relief funds were going towards renting garbage trucks to catch up on the backlog).

I'm sure our trash system isn't changing anytime soon, but it's worth considering that there are other workable systems as well that would conceivably reduce the number of workers/trucks needed and waste generated. When I visited my relatives in Taiwan, I was shocked to see a completely different paradigm in place: large garbage and recycling trucks would only stop on the major avenues on a predictable schedule every evening, and you had to take your trash out to it - you could tell when they were coming because they would blast loud classical music like an ice cream truck equipped with a tornado siren-level speaker. Between having to literally run your trash out to the truck, and the fact that you could only dispose of waste in designated trash bags that you had to purchase from the city at a higher cost than a regular plastic bag, you learned very quickly to minimize your waste production.

Obviously our system of trash collection is way more convenient in all aspects, leading to this point of massive trash generation spread out in a city/county with a low population density...  but a large urban services district covering most of the county that expects city-level services. I know that virtually no one - including me - would want to switch to a system like Taiwan's (it's not fair to the physically disabled/elderly/people with unconventional work shifts, among other things), but that's effectively what we're being asked to do with our recycling right now. Except we have to drive all of it to just a handful of recycling centers, generating CO2 emissions in excess of what a recycling truck would per pound of waste. That's a lot worse than bringing it over to the nearest large road when we hear the "ice cream truck" (I think that'd be a kinda funny way to finally meet some of my neighbors actually).  I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict that a lot of folks are instead going to be dumping all their cardboard boxes from online Christmas shopping into their trash bins, and that's going to counteract any "catch up" effort from redirecting recycling personnel to regular trash pickup. It just doesn't fix the root problem, which is too much trash (recycling or not) and a system stacked against disposing of all of it in a timely manner.

Nashville is placing bids to host either the Republican or Democratic National Convention in summer of 2024.

"We are bidding on both political party conventions for the 2024 election cycle at the request of and support from the Governor’s Office," said Butch Spyridon, CEO of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. "The NCVC’s primary role is to book convention business for Nashville without bias. We work daily with clients to book conventions and with individuals who want assistance in recruiting meetings and events. It’s not appropriate for the NCVC to pick and choose which groups get to meet in Nashville."

"The conventions are very expensive," Spryidon told the Business Journal in 2012. "They want the building free, the police free. They want everything free because of the entertainment and media windfall. They are not the attendance events they used to be. From a spending standpoint, they are not quite as lucrative."

I really don't want either to be honest. Even if it was the party whose ideology I align much more closely with, it would be annoying regardless to deal with the protests and crowds that will inevitably be brought in by either of these conventions.

This summer's Baptist convention at the MCC was already politically-charged enough with street preachers and demonstrators on every corner yelling throughout all hours of the day and being a general hassle to be around. And that was a much smaller affair than either of these would be.

All I know is this: life in my condo on Division Street has been much quieter since December 1.  The party is still going on but the 11:30 PM wake-up calls are nonexistent.

Gotta say … watching the NYE telecast from out of town with family, this was absolutely spectacular advertising for Nashville.

The 4+ hour Nashville Big Bash New Year's Eve shown nationally on CBS looked terrific (although I loathed a fair amount of the artists--modern country--uggggh). The skyline and all the music venues were quite photogenic. Certainly great exposure and further cementing that Music City is a place to go for fun events.
