For some reason, there was an era in Nashville that they didn’t care if we tore down the entire inner-loop.  It’s a wonder they didn’t tear down the state capitol and build some ugly 1970s block building with no windows in its place.

If you take a portal trip into my mind, I guarantee you'll see a slew of buildings and other "dated" clutter that met the ball dangling from the boom ─ things I've even forgotten about until now. 

The same happened to downtown Louisville, on 4th St., although the iconic Ryman arguably was made far more "visible" nationally by radio and TV broadcasts during the first 2 thirds of the 20th Century.  But Louisville had far more old stock of masonry structures, much of which in many ways seemed influenced by migration patterns from the central-eastern Midwest, whereas Nashville was more sequestered from the commercial and industrial activities which set off that massive construction evolution of the mid-Ohio Valley region.

I'm working on a website that will display, well, not all of them, but a lot of them. The amount of lost architecture in this city (and probably most other American cities) is staggering. It will be several more months before it goes live.

While the amount of lost architecture  is "staggrering", a great deal of  it prior to the 1960-70s wipeout,  is not  particularly a  tragedy as a great deal of it would never have been practical to preserve should it have survived to present day.  There are several promennt treasures unavoidably lost to fires like the Maxwell House.   Others, like some of the big hotels and apartments that MIGHT have been  repurposed like the James Robertson into the Holston House Hotel. are sad.  I could see that for the Sam Davis for example treated similarly.  However big hotels like the Andrew jackson just never would have been practical to renovate and preserve back at the time of its demolition.  The market for rooms was NOTHING like it is now.  Also downtown was being abandoned at the time to the suburbs.  If I had wishes perhaps I would have liked to see the Tulane still standing.  IMO there are really only a few dozen tragic losses in years past the 70s.  The Sudekum/ Tennesse tower and  the Victorians around the Courthouse square stand out in my memory as wll as the Father Ryan HS, the Watkins block on Church, the Railroad Train Shed,  the Carnagie Library and the First American National Bank.  When you discount losses due to fire, Nashville IMO has an AMAZING number  of its downtown historic buildins still standing... block after block of it.  1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Avenues, a deal of  Broadway and such.  On top of those, there are lots of protected neighborhoods Like Edgefield and Lockland Springs.  My observation of so much of the demolitions of large areas like Hell's Half Acre, the gulch and so much between McGavock and Lafayette was rotting  junk peppered witha only a few buildings perhaps worth saving.  As to your website, I would distinguish lost buildings by the REASONS for their loss rather than a lump sum gallery of them as cumlative collection to weep over.  Outrage should be given where deserved, not because of fires and tornados.  Old photos of areas like the stately homes out West End should not cause great angst... a lot of them are still there, their architecture covered up with hot pink additions.  I do not weep to see them go now or in the future.  There are some survivors, like the Louise Apartments off Elliston Place that are bemoaned for their coming demolition.   Too bad, but they are insanely impossibe to save no matter how beloved.  Unsafe, inacessible and too chopped up to bring up to current codes and standards.  Music Row?  Small 1920s-40s houses of no particular design worth...sheer museumism for the music industry nostalgia set most part IMO.  I think it would be far more interesting if you showed a selection of the most egregious demolitions that had they still existed now would be  awesome candidates for renewal.

You're making a lot of assumptions about the nature of the website. Maybe wait and see what it is?

I make NO assumptions about your site.  I merely make suggestions that I have observed in many other posts  bemoaning loss of historic buildings in which nostalgia freaks are having hissy fits whenever some favorite site is slated for the ball.  I.E. Rotiers/ Emmas recently.  In my estimation, most of them want NO change whatsoever.  The members of this forum generally are very pro change, so I don't think that would be an issue here.  One of the great lacks I feel in any compilation of "lost" structures suffers greatly from  including WHY some structures had to be razed.   You can be sure I will have have great interest in your issued product and will make kudos and criticisms as I see fit.  Loking forward to seeing it.

I will say this about the “losses” on Music Row.  The losses there are more about the businesses…than the actual buildings.  Most don’t understand that those little houses contained “boxed in” publishing houses and studios that will never be replicated properly in new office construction on Music Row.  They will leave the area.  You do not place music creators in a building with other businesses unless you want an outright daily fight.  Believe…I’ve seen it and lived with it firsthand.

All of those small houses with music types inside creating music for the world as a “campus” was what was magical about Music Row.  But most of that is gone now.  Spread across the city to other areas (other than a few holdouts here and there).  Plus…with the internet, much more music creation is done online…which is kinda a shame.  Nothing tops 3 people sitting in a room together hammering out a verse and chorus…running to Arnolds for some Roast Beef…and back in the afternoon to finish the rest of the song.

Probably true except for the Maxwell House which had no sprinkler system headsmack, and was a mostly wooden structure floors included. Like the Omni Mount Washington in New Hampshire if you've seen it.

So, correct me if I'm wrong here, but it sounds to me like your "conspiracy," in this case, is that the 2020 Census, which was conducted under the watch of a red administration, intentionally undercounted red states (except Illinois... whoops) and intentionally overcounted blue states (except Utah and Ohio... whoops!)  Like I said... some simply seem intent on hunting for conspiracies where there are none to be found.  Ever consider that perhaps they were just incompetent, or perhaps the pandemic and all the anomalies that came with it simply made it more difficult to get accurate counts?  With all due respect my friend, everything ain't always a conspiracy just because it doesn't sit quite right with you, ya know?

We have them here in DE in droves.  When I first moved here, I'm like what kind of name is Wawa???  I've learned to respect them.  They don't mess around and when they enter your market, competitors better roll up their sleeves...

Wawa is one of those places like Bucees and Sheetz that have almost cult like loyalty. They definitely an east coast brand, but certainly not a NorthEast brand as I believe the furtherst north they go is PA. 

Now Sheetz... When travelling to and from New England, my girlfriend and I almost always work our fuel stops around those places as the bathrooms are ALWAYS clean and the food isn't bad for gas station food haha.

Wawa is more mid Atlantic and Florida chain of convenience stores as of now.  They have indicated they want to move into NC south from VA as they are building out Florida.  Sheetz which is from PA is their main competitor and is already in northern NC but Quiktrip based in Oklahoma is big in the Charlotte area which has no Sheetz.

Bucee's is another thing all together and can't wait to go to your Crossville store.  It is a like a department store with 120 gas pumps out front with apparel, lots of snack foods and specialty foods and a good amount of prepared foods like brisket sandwiches  and other hot sandwiches.  Their stores average 53,000 sq ft!   Houston area based.   These are fewer and far between  and only located on major interstates. 

I have been to all three of these Wawa in Florida, Sheetz here in NC and at least 15 Bucee's locations in Texas, Florida, and now in SC.   Consider me apart of the Bucee's cult

As a certified Sheetz occultist they are very good!

I grew up near Pittsburgh and Sheetz was the main player around those woods. Never really thought much about Sheetz until I moved here and didn't have it anymore. Like @Bos2Nash said about planning trip around them, that is how I do it too. Plus the food is a lot better than you would think for a gas station. I would take them over a lot fast food places. When I took my wife back north, I told her that she's going to have to trust me on eating at a gas station.
