Approval for the HH/Global Mall at the Crossings hockey rinks and redevelopment is approved.

On the green roof tour of the Westview, the company that installed that mentioned that there will be a good-sized green roof involved in the Global Mall projects. I believe he said a good bit of the old JC Penney would have a green roof as well.

Very nice update, Ron. The Gulch hotel is an intriguing project to say the least. At least now I have a better grasp of their concept.

BNA topping 10 million was basically inevitable. You could see very steady increases over the past 3 or so years.

You accidentally copied & pasted the link for the drive-in twice...you put it again where you meant to put the BoA article link.

Was at a conference last week in San Jose, CA.  Left last Sunday and the airport was packed!  I don't think I had to ever wait that long before since the new security renovations.  Missed my flight, but luckily I was flying SW and was able to get another flight out only an hr after.

Got some (ok, lots!) pics to post and thoughts to go with them if I get the chance.

Very interesting. I'm glad to see that there is a clear vision for this project -- not just a vague concept. That gives me a lot more hope for this coming through.

He mentions that they plan to start construction early next year, and be open in early 2015. That makes me think that the old convention center site almost surely has to be location.

The City Paper is folding.  A sad day for local journalism.

The Tennessean is pathetic, so very typical of Gannett.  The once excellent Tennessean (decades ago under John Seigenthaler) it now has to rank among the worst major newspapers in the country.  There is little news in the Tennessean and zero investigative reporting. Newspapers everywhere are in steep decline, and Nashville is no exception.  Clearly that's why Gannett is looking to cash in on their valuable property in The Gulch.

The Nashville Business Journal is also cookie cutter, cut and paste reporting, but has some decent local reporting.

I'll miss The City Paper.

OK... trying to post a chart here.  I don't know how it will go.  Before I try this, I want to mention that it appears the Nashville metro area has grown by 137,000 in the two years from 2010 to 2012 (If I'm reading this correctly). Granted these are estimates, but usually estimates are just a continuation of recent year growth rates prior to the decennial census.  All of this made this appear quite interesting... and I don't think any counties have been added in that time.  Entertaining the idea of a continuation of the same growth for the next seven years, then the metro population would be around 2.3 million in 2020.  Of course, I think that might be a tad faster than we'll actually see, but I think it's realistic that the population will be nudging 2.1 million.

Anyway, here's my attempt at pasting a chart...

Nashville's metro grew by about 56,000 between 2010-2012. The extra 80,000 comes from the addition of Maury County to the MSA.

At the ~28,000 yearly growth level, we would end up with about 1.95 million by 2020. If we grow at around the same percentage as we did from 2000-2010 (~21%), we would end up with about 2.02 million.

Here's a thread with some of the numbers:

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php/topic/115960-nashville-area-population-trends-1950-2012/

I've done some Excel sheets with different growth possibilities (purely numerical based)...most point to around 2 million (with Maury included).

Ah... thank you!!!   That's why I posted.  I see the asterisk for Maury in the 2010 column, but I assumed those totals were accounted for in the 2010 figure (an apples-to-apples) comparison between 2010 and 2012.  Apparently not!

Thanks to all who posted nice words about TCP.

I'll miss working for the paper but remain with sister pub Nashville Post.

WW

I will miss the City Paper, for sure.  I checked it religiously, every single day.  However, it is easier to swallow knowing that your brilliant reporting will continue on with a different publication!

Isn't WW a writer for the city paper, does that mean he will be writing for the tennessean now?

William is a staff writer at South Comm. South Comm owns the CP, Nashville Post, The Nashville Scene, and a number of other publication in Nashville and across the South and Midwest. Their HQ is in Nashville.

The Tennessean is owned by Gannet, same folks that own USA Today

Some old "breaking news" from stringsnashville.com:

STRINGS Development Partners is seeking a high end, full service hotel to anchor the Project. The proposed development site will be within close proximity to the new Music City Center which is scheduled to open in May 2013.

and from their blog:

Strings Development Partners has narrowed their search to three potential sites for the Project. All sites are located in The Gulch and SoBro areas of Nashville. Stay tuned for more information.
