Nashville Bits and Pieces

New zoning requirements to include bicycle parking requirements for new construction in the Urban Zoning Overlay district are up for consideration in this Thursday's Planning Commission docket.  Single- and I believe two-family residential projects excluded (obviously).  This is one more little push to get Nashville more bicyle-friendly.  I am optimistic about this bill.  My Council Member, Peter Westerholm, is one of the co-sponsors.  Hooray!

I think that in general a lot of the new construction is indeed subpar.  It may look pretty but I suspect that quite a bit won't hold up well or age well.  This phenomenon is by no means limited to the Gulch.  There certainly are some quality projects out there with truly great construction and finishes.  But I fear that a lot of stuff is being thrown up, literally.  Let the buyer beware.

A newly constructed project in Lexington called The Lex recently had an incident that raised questions in my mind about the quality of construction of stick frame apartments. The Lex was finished probably 4 years ago and was built with stick frame and is comparable in size to Pine Street Flats. There was a party in one of the apartments a couple months ago with several UK students when the floor collapsed from the weight of the people. It was a third or fourth floor apartment and people fell into the apartment below it. Luckily there weren't any serious injuries, but it makes me concerned about the structural stability of these buildings when the weight of a group of people can cause a structural failure.

I love this!  I'm not a soccer fan at all, but I am excited to see the sport grow in Nashville.  I think turning Greer into a soccer stadium is brilliant.  As I recall, Phil Bredesen admitted that he wasn't a football fan but recognized the value of having the NFL in Nashville when the Oilers came knocking.  I guess that's how I am about soccer; I couldn't care less about the game, but having a professional soccer team in town can only be good for Nashville.

The Tennessean is reporting that the United Meth. Publishing Group is eyeing a building in Metro Center. I am fine with the move, but like many of you I do want to see the Keeble building saved if possible. No buyers yet for 8th Ave. Property.

I know this is off topic, but I stayed at a W Hotel this past weekend in Atlanta. When I checked in and the concierge saw that I was from Nashville, they mentioned that they had been hearing about a W coming to Nashville? Can anyone speak to this, or is this (again) just a rumor?

Of course most of us all ready know this , but the city has to le developers build highrises taller than their are now ,

I dont the city is looking at the facts that the more sf, the tower or investment from the developer has , which makes since to build higher with the land bought, examples office, or condo properties build at 20 stories , can fit only so many people in that build, when I see the need to build at 50+ for my profits.

But if I was a developer just if I see the potential to build a taller building because I believe in Nashville, why as a developer do Ihave to go through so many hurdles for approval,

I mean im the investor, investing in your city! Why restrict that http://nashvillepost.com/news/2014/3/26/planner_maximizing_per_acre_development_will_be_key_to_nashville_s_economic_health
