Remember how I said there was a shift of demographics away from urban areas because of unshared values? This is a prime example. Idolizing of murderers.

I wasn't following the trial. Did they actually have evidence other than lyrics? I know a witness changed his mind.

"Idolizing of murderers" isn't a very good argument. Americans and people in general love violence and discord. The popularity of action and horror films, sports and hunting is a testimate to that...I think different expression of values should be used instead of just different values.

I agree with him that the values of young people today are horrible...but I am pretty sure every generation makes complaint at some point. .

Every older generation has something to say about the one after it. They hated swing music, jazz music, rock and roll, and Run DMC, etc. It's nothing new.

How about these low-life scum bags responsible for the death of their 8-year old???

Sheriff: charges in boy's beating now Murder 1

A Baton Rouge couple is now accused of first-degree murder of their 8-year-old son, up from second-degree murder.

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks says Michael Robertson and Lavaughn Riley were rebooked after an autopsy found that Xzayvion Riley's intestine ruptured from being hit in the belly. She quotes a forensic pathologist as saying it was treatable, early on.

Hicks says a sister told investigators Robertson punched her brother for hours last Monday, and Xzayvion complained of stomach pains and vomited all night. Robertson and Riley were booked with second-degree murder on Tuesday, the day he died. Deputies say Xzavion's body bore 56 bruises, abrasions and cuts including an adult-size bite mark on his stomach.

It was not clear whether the couple had an attorney.

B.R. police beefing up Tigerland area presence

The Baton Rouge Police Department is stepping up patrols and deploying as many as 20 officers at a time in the Tigerland area. A spokesman for the BRPD tells Daily Report the move comes in response to concerns about an increase in crime in the iconic neighborhood of apartments and night clubs, which was a popular residential area with LSU students from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s, but has since deteriorated into one of the city's pockets of crime and blight.

"It is not that there has been an increase in crime or a spike in crime," Cpl. Tommy Stubbs says. "But there is a lot more concern about it."

Stubbs says in the past two weeks or so, the BRPD has launched two initiatives specifically focused on Tigerland. One is the Safe Streets Task Force, a group of seven to 10 officers who will primarily patrol areas in and around the college bars looking for alcohol-related violations. The other is a street operations task force, which will deploy as many as 15 or 20 officers at a time, depending on availability.

Wishes granted. Now BRPD needs the 170 new officers it desperately lacks.

The former police chief and Sheriff says it would create a department with all the power in two separate governing areas. With the merger of city and parish governments, one would think it would be much simpler to merge the departments together. Don't both departments, including State Police troops in the area, train at the State Police Academy on Independence Blvd? I believe it would have no impact on crime as city police respond to many areas outside of city limits to assist Deputies.

I could actually use some more community opinion on this issue. My wife and I recently moved to the area and have been living in an apartment near Perkins Rowe. We are now looking to purchase a home and have found a great one in the Spring Lake subdivision. It looks like a great neighborhood, but I see some posts in this thread about rampant crime and people leaving, can anyone provide more details about that? Also, does anyone know what is going to come of the open field behind that area, continuing to Bluebonnet/Nicholson?

Sadly there is a large crime ridden area near the intersection of Bluebonnet/Burbank called "Gardere". It is behind the Springlake neighborhood. I would avoid it. Have known someone who lives there and was burglarized. It's a shame becaus the neighborhood is next to the BREC park. If I were you and wanted to move there I would find a place as close to the park as possible and away from Gardere. Preferably the Hilltree Dr, Hill Ridge Ave, Hillbrook Ave areas (aka as close to the park you can get).

The area at Bluebonnet/Nicholson is going to be a TND called Harveston. Prices will range from 300-400k.

Crime can happen anywhere and the Gardere area will probably have a change in it's demographics within the next 5-10 years. A change for the better, that is.

I have friends and relatives in Spring Lake. It's a nice area with very little, if any crime. Easy access to LSU as well.

LSU's research park is going up around Gardere, which does have some shady four plexes. Those are slowly being removed, however, and there is an uptick in police presence since the substation was added on Burbank.

Are they planning to tear down those old crime ridden apartments? That would be a start.

Just be sues there's a casino and a 400k home neighborhood in the area doesn't mean crime will magically disappear.

What side of bluebonnet do they live on?

One of my best friends bought a home on the north (or west?) side in the "springlake" development 4 or 5 years ago and still lives there....one of my fraternity brothers also bought in the area last year just a few streets down.

My aunt lives in the adjacent development across Bluebonnet called "something hill".

My only concern in that area would be bluebonnet traffic.

I did some work over on GSRI some months ago and a few of the buildings were boarded up. That's not a definite sign for future demolition but it should be heading that way. The casino will bring more and more investment, same with the new homes, and the new hotel. Eventually the crime element will be dispersed at the least.

Thanks for the response everyone. I am actually looking at a great house in Springlake that is at the far back of the subdivision up against the field that is to be developed. I have just been reading about the crime and it has made me apprehensive to make a committment to the area. That said, I am hoping the folks that see indications of some potential "dispersement" of crime are right and that some of the further area development will start to turn things back in the right direction. I'd hate to lose this house because of unfounded fear, but I'd really hate to buy it and be stuck in criminal playground.

Springlake is no criminal playground. I think it's a solid choice for a newer home in south Baton Rouge.

Sounds like your house is a very close to my friend's home. I've spent plenty of time there. It's a nice area, and I don't think you have much to worry about.

Crime happens everywhere. I don't think you'll see anything unusual in Spring lake. A police officer lives on Springglen street if I'm not mistaken. I know this because he wrote me a ticket for parking "against the flow" in front if his own house.

A word of advice, go up to the homes that are for sale and ask them about the neighborhood. You may feel silly but would you rather feel silly or buy a home and be victimized later. I did that after buying one of our homes.

A friend lived on Springtime Dr and after the burglary the cops said they had reports of people hanging out along the fence/dirt road that runs along behind the homes on Springbrook Ave and Springglen Ct. At the time it was a problem. He has since moved so I don't know what the situation is like now. You might also consider the fact that at the corner of Bluebonnet/Burbank they are about to build a Walmart. Take that into consideration for future property value.

Springtime is the street I am considering purchasing on. When I went to a showing of the house I did see a BRPD car backing into a driveway about 10 houses down on Springpark, so that made me feel a little better potentially having police living nearby. The lot does back up to the field/dirt road you are talking about I belive.
