This casino owned by the Catawbas in NC is far from a sure thing.  I still think this will go all the way to the Supreme Court and it will be Cherokee vs Catawba.  This article does explain a little bit about the 1993 settlement how the Catawbas got a reservation but it banned casino on that property.   I just don't see how a casino in Kings Mtn is going to help people on the reservation outside of Rock Hill get out of poverty (unless it is just sending checks to someone vs a job and life building skills)   This thread will be open for years to come I am afraid.

Since the Cherokees are involved in this discussion about the Catawba's casino project in Kings Mtn.  Here is what the Cherokees are doing.  They are adding 725 rooms to their existing 1100 room

Here is a good article that explains what happens with indian casino money, and it really varies based on the state, what games are offered, size of the complex (i.e. bingo only vs. casino resort).  And there are strict rules on how a tribe spends their net profits:

I am not sure if they have any businesses per se on the reservation most are employed in Rock Hill or elsewhere.

I know you're excited about development around the Charlotte perimeter, but I just can't get so excited about all this.  Such a great opportunity for the Catawba to help preserve some natural land and promote ecotourism. But, I know, it's all about money.

My impression is it'll be like a lot of the bigger native casinos up around Seattle: small-ish, mostly slots, a 3-4 star hotel attached, a place you go and stay for a night at most. Someone on twitter used the example of a bachelor party staying in Charlotte and going to the casino for a night, and I think that's probably accurate.

Unfortunately I cannot give away much details on this project from my gaming industry contacts but financing is being secured for this project and it is very much a go. They will be partnering with a known casino operations company and they are working to get a compact with the state to offer “Vegas style” gaming.

What does "Vegas-style" mean? Just tables with dealers (i.e. not all video gaming)?

Can we also talk about how this section from their Wikipedia page is VERY funny? Their big controversies are they claimed they actually owned the name of Yellowstone National park (!) and then one of their VPs ran for congress against a member of the owner's family and was then placed on unpaid leave.

Yes exactly right, and also the type of slot machines they have would be random number generated based versus bingo based like you see at the casinos that don’t have compacts (agreements) with the state. On the surface you won’t be able to tell which is bingo based and which one is based off random number generators as they’ve become virtually indistinguishable. Also the compact they make with the state could limit them, especially if Cherokee gets involved, to the types of table games they offer. For example, maybe only blackjack, or maybe blackjack and roulette but not craps, etc... it is the in the benefit of both sides to make a compact as Catawba can offer more games if they make an agreement and the state would be able to collect tax revenue, versus if they don’t enter into a compact, Catawba can run bingo based (Class II gaming) but be limited in the games they offer and not have to pay taxes to the state

It probably will have a hotel shortly after the casino’s opening, it’s a lot easier to build a casino quickly than it is a full hotel, they could build a temporary casino facility while they build the full infrastructure

Would this become the closest casino for Atlanta and Raleigh? If so, maybe this could become a huge draw for cities along the I-85 corridor.

I believe Harrah's may be the closest for Atlanta, but this would be the closest to quite a large chunk of the N.C. population.

I was curious about the Atlanta distance the other day as well, why I don't know lol.  But leaving any time after around 10 AM from Atlanta Google shows 2 hr 40 min - 3 hr 50 min to Harrah's and 3 hr 10 min - 4 hr 20 min to Kings Mountain.
