Question: I’m not at all familiar with the topic of casinos, nor have I been to one, but what kind of realistic growth would this casino bring to this area? Is there even an area plan for the surrounding land near the Dixon Road interchange? I know hotels will likely pop up, but can we expect this area to become a significant tourist attraction for the region?

Also, groundbreaking for the project is happening next Wednesday, with hopes of opening in mid-2021:

I wish there was a hotel attached to this Casino. Not that Kings Mountain is a Las Vegas or anything, but it does have a few nearby attractions such as Kings Mountain and Crowders Mountain, I believe a hotel would be a useful asset.

Wait, there isn't a hotel attached to this thing? Then, yeah, some will spring up across the street. Maybe a Waffle House and a gas station!

So the Casino would be operated separately from the Hard Rock?

Pretty sure it was a Hard Rock Casino with 750 room hotel attached. Not sure if that route was scrapped for the plans they currently are breaking ground on, but that is what I heard this venture was going to be

Don't think this is a done deal by any means.  Read this from the Governors office. and remember the Cherokees are in Federal court over this.

Key paragraph

""Gov. Roy Cooper must approve a compact to allow class III gaming — involving high-stakes table games and slot machines — at the project.  In a statement provided to the Charlotte Business Journal, a spokesperson for Cooper said the negotiations for the compact have not even begun. "Earlier this year, the land was taken into trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and that is currently being litigated. While the Catawba Indian Nation is moving forward with a facility, necessary gaming compact negotiations with the state have not yet occurred."

Are the Cherokee against this project because it would take away revenue from their casino, or is there another reason? I’m ignorant to these kinds of affairs, but if the Catawba is able to secure land and the proper licenses, then shouldn’t they be allowed to operate a casino like the Cherokee can?

Both reasons.  Cherokees are concerned about their 2 existing casinos of course but also because the Cherokees claim this as their ancestral land as well.  I think if the Catawbas stayed in SC near Rock Hill this would not be a problem but to have this in NC in the western part of the state concerns them.

The land for the casino complex has already been cleared.  Lots of earth-moving equipment on site now.

The casino name has been announced as TWO KINGS CASINO RESORT to honor King Hagler (past

Chief of the tribe in the late 1700's) and the Kings Mountain region.

I assume the Cherokee tribe is mostly concerned about the potential for lost revenue.

We have a town of CATAWBA, a CATAWBA county and a CATAWBA river in NC so somehow their heritage was recognized

here before or after state lines were drawn.  It appears they may have shared lands, but possibly later decided to declare territories.

I don't know.  I hope the state and the tribe can come to an agreement eventually.  The area could really use the economic jolt!

you are right these tribal land claims predate any state lines and were always subject to change do to agreements or even battles.  I think the fact this casino is outside the state were the federally recognized tribe lives and has a reservation is sticking point.  For the life of me not sure why SC would not have approve this for Rock Hill as it would have been so much closer to Charlotte which is obviously their target market for this casino.     Harrahs Cherokee and the smaller one in Murphy draws substantial business from east Tennessee and the Atlanta metro which is closer than Charlotte is but the piedmont of NC is a part of their market area as well.

The benefits of the profits will benefit the SC based tribe and their land holdings there though providing jobs to Kings Mtn.  In the case of Cherokee all the money and profts are spent within NC and Cherokees have invested heavily in their schools there, the medical facilities, their housing and tourism promotion that all benefits NC.   That will not be the case with this casino has the profts will be spent in SC at their reservation and by their members.

This is why the state line and Mecklenburg County line have the perfect angle at the border:

https://www.steelecreekresidents.org/maps/map_stateboundary.htm

Also, and per usual, white men ignored the map or bartered and purchased the land without concern over the years until the tribe members were without a reservation. The Catawbas had lawyers, though. They pursued claims to their original property and inserted their claims into chains of title which made it more difficult to sell and develop property. John Spratt, direct descendant of Thomas Spratt, of the earliest settler of Charlotte, and congressman for that district of South Carolina, negotiated the agreement for the tribe and members to release their demands BUT with no gambling option in the future due to resistance from South Carolina.
