Judging by other similar casinos, including harrahs cherokee, it will be surrounded by sadness.

Since the Cherokees are involved in this discussion about the Catawba's casino project in Kings Mtn.  Here is what the Cherokees are doing.  They are adding 725 rooms to their existing 1100 room

I think we will inevitably see more housing on that side of Kings Mountain as a result. It isn't necessarily needed though as there are plenty of workers within a 5 to 20 minute commute between Kings Mountain, Shelby, Bessemer City, and Gastonia to staff the casino. This is largely being pitched as bringing needed employment to that part of the metro for existing residents, rather than importing people in.

I know this project has not been without controversy, but I feel the completion of this project will be a huge win for the Charlotte area in terms of entertainment.  While, unfortunately, the location will be too far out of town to really attract an out of town crowd in terms of people who would be flying into the area.  It should be a good reason to bring many locals from rural North Carolina and South Carolina to the Charlotte area on a more frequent basis.  

In Kentucky, with there being no  casinos (barring a local loophole called Historical (horse) racing, that essentially allows slots at a few locations around the state).  A sizable amount of people are willing to drive 2-3 hours to full scale casino locations with table games on the Indiana and Ohio borders.  

I understand Kings Mountain's complaints in the regards that it will detract from their other restaurants and attractions, but i have to think the overall result of the casino will be an overwhelmingly net positive.

We have a major casino within 3 hours drive of Charlotte in Cherokee.  Plus it is at the entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park the most visited park in the nation.  This Kings Mtn. casino may draw daytrippers but I just don't know how many people will make a vacation or long weekend stay at this one (once they get their hotel rooms open).

The gamblers who currently head to Cherokee would switch to Kings Mountain in a heartbeat to save 2.5 hours of driving. Hotel rooms are for 4 hours naps at 3am for these people, not people passing through on vacation. Sure there might still be vacation traffic and families that still go to Cherokee, but this is going to be a HUGE blow to the real gamblers for Cherokee, which is where they make the majority of their money.

I am not going out there until there is more than a bunch of doublewides with slot machines basically not really interested into they get into a permanent building.  If I am in the area you know I snap some photos.  

I usually stay in Cherokee when visiting the Great Smoky Mountains NP.  I find it easier to get to and a lot less congested than Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge.  The NC part of the park is less visited and has 90% of the wild elk.  So in the evening I may run over Harrahs and all casinos are built on losers including those in Vegas!

All 3 of their gaming facilities are Horse/Greyhound (in the case of Southland) Racing tracks /Casino combos.  Commonly known as Racinos.  This means that a some degree of their profits are going towards helping support the racing aspect, perhaps taking away from other areas.

As an avid fan of horse racing.  This is becoming quite a common trend in the sport nationwide and is being further extended to include sports betting where allowed.

Given that this property won't have a horse track, they may be able to spend more in other areas.

this is a great article talking about the Catawba Indian casino and the Cherokee's casinos.

I still feel much of the beneift to the tribe will flow into SC and not stay in NC other than the jobs and taxes whereas Cherokees' casinos have really benefited their members living in NC.

That’s an easy drive from downtown Charlotte, just 10 minutes from the I-77 corridor.

and this what the?   I thought Wilmington was in SE NC

This operator of this casino is not a major player that is for sure.    I will stick with Harrahs up in Cherokee for any of my gaming needs.

I mean technically if you can get to 77 in 10 minutes...you "could" be in southeast NC pretty quickly. LOL

Lumbee tribe of eastern NC Robeson County mainly is trying again to get full Federal recognition.  If this passes the Senate then they will finally have full rights and they can develop a casino if they want.  I predict they will look for a major casino probably at US 74 and I-95 in Robeson County.

Project leaders for the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort in Kings Mountain say the pre-launch piece of the project is just weeks away from opening in July.

The Catawba Nation hopes to have construction plans for its full casino resort in Kings Mountain announced this year.

The Catawba Two Kings Casino issued a news release today to celebrate the upcoming one-year anniversary of the Catawbas' gaming operations in Kings Mountain. The temporary, pre-launch facility, which has 1,000 electronic gaming machines, opened on July 1 of last year. That facility is operating until the first full casino phase can be completed.

Trent Troxel, vice president of the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority, said plans for the full casino resort are being finalized. Agreements with operators and developers for the full casino need approval from the National Indian Gaming Commission. Troxel said those agreements are under review with the commission now. The plan is to announce a timetable for the construction of the full casino resort later in 2022.

Until then, the Catawba Nation is funding infrastructure improvements at and around the site. Those improvements include "doubling the size of the Dixon School Road Bridge" over Interstate 85 and the implementation of new sewer lines.

Project leaders have said previously that the full casino resort will be built in multiple phases and create over 2,600 jobs upon full buildout. Until the full casino is built, project leaders have been moving ahead with adding to the temporary, pre-launch facility.

It initially opened with 500 electronic gaming machines last July before an expansion was completed in late 2021 to double that number. Now, Delaware North, the company working with the Catawbas on their casino operations, has confirmed plans for an on-site sportsbook there, which is being targeted to open before football season.

The pre-launch facility employs approximately 260 workers. Today's news release stated the casino "counts more than 100,000 members in its loyalty club."

Specific details about when the full casino resort might be built out have been scarce. Some of the most detailed plans revealed in a public setting came in October 2021, when Cleveland County's business development director, Jason Falls, gave a presentation to his county board about the first phase of the full casino.

At the time, Falls laid out a vision for a large two-story building with a gaming floor and restaurants, along with a 29-story neighboring hotel tower. He said in that presentation that construction was being targeted for January 2022, but added a caveat that plans "change often" for those leading the casino project. The site for the full casino, which is on Dixon School Road and just off Exit 5 of Interstate 85, has been graded for many months.
