According to a guy on my neighborhood Facebook, they're about to close on a lease and target opening December-January timeframe. (We all know how that goes.) Sounds like somewhere along West Catawba near the interstate

That'll give Cornelius one brewery for every 5,700 people. I moved to the right place

Only Brad Panovich of WCNC could tweet this out the list of breweries per NWS zones and of course since we are in Greenville Spartanburg zone as well as Asheville this is what the brewery landscape looks like.

The one NJ is a head scratcher. I’ve thrown a lot of rocks in NJ, none have hit a brewery.

How in the heck is the Atlanta metro smaller in scope than Charlotte/WNC/Upstate?  I would expect that to be bigger just based on population.  In Charleston, SC (yes b/c i have to differentiate it from WV......) one of the breweries I went to back in April has already closed, so I'd say that 37 is =/- 1.

 320 in Philly metro and 3 in Jersey.   LOL.   I'm with you.  I grew up in PA and still have a lot of friends up there.  Can't say I ever heard one of them mention a NJ brewery.

GA has had very unfriendly brewery laws for a  long time.  Not brewery friendly at all (its slowly changing in GA).   Those numbers don't surprise me at all.

Yes it is Ashvegas plus Charlotte and as noted Atlanta despite its massive population in Georgia only recently changed their brewery laws.

Its not open yet (and certainly won't be in 'late summer') but work is happening in the former clothing store.  Tim was making good progress on the building rehab back in early May but things have slowed down considerably since then (I suspect a metalwork issue with his mezzanine plans). When I checked a couple weeks ago he was not close to moving brewing equipment in. The plans for the building sound impressive (will be a 2 story space) and I get the sense that there is some money backing this effort so I would bet it will happen. I am looking forward to it since I am often over that way and I have never been happy at Unknown (for both beer-related and architectural reasons).

(Source: Tim often drinks PBR (?) at Palmer Street and is very chatty after he leaves the work site)

Anybody seen any Seattle beers in stores around here? I know Charlotte has a ton of great local beer and I enjoy drinking most of it, but every now and then I really just want a Rainier or something from a PNW craft brewery. I'm betting none of it gets shipped out here but has anyone seen any around?

Best bet in my mind is to check out Salud in NoDa. They bring in tons of beer from the West coast but if there's something in particular you're looking for talk to them about eventually ordering some

I miss Mac & Jack's african amber from my days out in the PNW.  I used to be able to find some Southern Oregon beers (Caldera) at Total Wine but that does not seem to be the case anymore from a quick search online. Deschutes is everywhere now too.

I kinda popped my craft beer cherry on Manny's Pale Ale. I really miss it.

In other news, Middle James in Pineville "Grand Opening" is Aug 23 at 11am.  No word on any soft or unofficial opening before that. Honestly could be a disaster if they aren't open at all before that. I wish them luck.

I'm sure you all know a bill was passed into law (effective Sep 1) that allows dogs in breweries (ed. note: gross, don't at me).  But are you aware of all the other stuff that was in the same bill?  Here's a link to a summary, and also my summary of the summary.

Beer tasting/sales at farmers markets - Breweries can provide samples and sell product at Farmers Markets.

Common area permit - If two tenants of a property (such as a food hall) have alcohol permits, the property can get an "umbrella" Common Area permit which allows you to move freely on the property with your beer/wine/mixeddrank.

2 beers per person - Beer/wine can be sold 2 at a time per person, except at college stadiums/arenas or events sponsored by colleges.  Also, mixed drinks only 1 at a time.

Beer private labels - Breweries can create private label brands for retailers, which can be labeled with the retailer's name and sold exclusively to the retailer.

Increase in allowed discount - Beer/Wine can be discounted up to 35% off (via coupons, rebates, and loyalty cards)......up from 25% in the old law.

Distilleries can sell beer/wine/drinks - Distilleries can sell beer/wine/drinks.

Distilleries sales - Distilleries can sell unlimited bottles per customer (up from 5 per year), and customer don't have to take a tour before buying.  Distilleries no longer have to keep detailed records of their per-customer sales.

Distillery tastings at ABC stores - Distilleries can do tastings at ABC stores.  But they have to buy the liquor (their own liquor!!) from the ABC store.  And they can't advertise the tasting.  And they can't sell any merchandise at the tasting.  And ABC employees may not "participate".

A lot more - A lot more stuff but I don't really care

And that's about all I know about new beverage laws.

This one is kind of cool.  Was that against the law in the past?  Would that open the door to local breweries creating unique products to be sold by local sports teams or something?

I think they already do that, which is confusing. Birdsong sells "All Knight Long" at BB&T ballpark, for example.

I fear this may become a real PITA in  some situations (it’s already a pain at the ballpark)
