Note for Charlotte, Tennessee

It was named after Charlotte Robertson, wife of James Robertson, who was the founder of Nashville. But interestingly enough, she was a North Carolinian. :)

(this is also why you see the name Charlotte a lot around Nashville/Middle Tennessee)

I am originally from Virginia, which has lots of unusual name for both cities and counties: King and Queen County, Emporia, etc... Now I live in NC and I have read and heard by many sources that a town near to me, Statesville pop. 25,000, is the only one with that name (at least the source quoted the postal service as such). But personally, I think Atlanta has to be a unique and fabulous name for a city, and it has been copied: there is an Atlanta, Texas, pop. 6,000, an Atlanta, Illinois, pop. 1,600, an Atlanta, Indiana, pop. 800, plus an Atlanta in Nebraska, Missouri, and New York that have few, if any residents. The name Atlanta, according to this website, comes from the Greek god Atlas, and that the word Atlantic comes from him. I've also read in Greek mythology that Poseidon possessed an island named Atlanta. There was also an ancient, beautiful Greek heroine named Atlanta that everyone wanted to marry. She was the fastest woman in the land and she challenged any man who could beat her that she would marry him. Hippomenes challenged her to a race, and during the race, he dropped apples and she could not resist picking them up, and he won and married her.

Aw man, you took mine! :D For history buffs, the original (and the best one, I might add) Charleston was originally named Charles Towne after the British King Charles. After the Revolutionary War, it was changed to Charleston and has been copied on ever since! :P

To expand on Krazeeboi's Columbia list I will offer the following:

Columbia, SC was the first Columbia and is the largest Columbia by a great margin. If I'm not mistaken, Columbia was also the first city named for Christopher Columbus, although I'm not sure that he's someone we want to emulate. Here are the other Columbia's:

Columbia, Md

Columbia, Mo

Columbia, Ct

Columbia, Ca

Columbia, La

Columbia, Ill

Columbia, Ia

Columbia, Al

Columbia, Ky

Columbia, Ms

Columbia, NC

Columbia, NJ

Columbia, Pa

Columbia, SD

Columbia, Tn

Columbia, Va

Columbia, Ga

Columbia, Az

Columbia, De

Columbia, Fl

Columbia, In

Columbia, Me

Columbia, NH

Columbia, Oh

Columbia, PR

Columbia, Ut

Columbia, Wi

Columbia, WV

and Columbia, Wa

Then there are all of the cities with Columbia as part of their name....
