Richmond, Virginia

Parents who want to send their kids to a nudist camp by themselves won't be able to do so in Virginia.

A federal judge is upholding a state law requiring that a parent or legal guardian accompany each participant at the nudist summer camp for kids.

The ACLU had argued that the law violated the rights of parents to raise their children as they see fit.

In his ruling, the judge says the organizers surrendered their permit to operate the camp this summer -- so the lawsuit became moot.

The ACLU says Tuesday's ruling will probably be appealed.

State lawmakers passed the law in response to last summer's week-long camp for eleven-to-18-year-olds. It took effect last month -- prompting organizers to move this year's event to another state.

A spokesman for Virginia's attorney general says camps for nude teens will attract pedophiles -- and that the law is "common sense."
